Bayern Munich president rules out move for Florian Wirtz

Florian Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in June 2025 in a £100million deal that could rise to £116million with add-ons, making him the most expensive signing by an English club at the time.

The German international chose Liverpool over Bayern Munich, who had pursued him for years, with Manchester City also interested. Wirtz explained that he wanted a new experience outside the Bundesliga.

During his debut 2025/26 campaign, Wirtz made 49 appearances across all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing 10 assists. His first goal for Liverpool came against Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 27 last year.

This season, however, he has registered no goals in eight appearances, contributing two assists. His latest came in Liverpool’s 6-3 Champions League victory over Austrian side LASK on Wednesday, setting up Bradley Barcola.

Bayern Munich are not currently planning a move for Wirtz. Club president Herbert Hainer has indicated that the German champions are not considering signing the midfielder, who remains under contract at Anfield until 2030.

“First of all, I think Florian Wirtz is an outstanding player, there’s absolutely no question about that and I almost feel a little sorry for him that he hasn’t yet reached the form in England that he had at Leverkusen, because we also need him for the German national team,” Herbert Hainer said.

Hainer added: “We have such a top-class squad that we are incredibly happy at the moment, and therefore this is not an issue for us at the moment.”

The statistics suggested Wirtz was destined to succeed when he left the Bundesliga to join Liverpool. It was not just data analysts who expected him to be a revelation – several former players were also impressed by his technical ability.

However, Wirtz has struggled to make his mark at Anfield so far. Liverpool’s inconsistent form has also not helped, particularly with injuries affecting their forward options and a lack of investment in defence.

The absence of an established right-back for much of his time at the club has also hindered his development, especially when operating on that side of the pitch.
