There is a moment every teenager experiences when they step out of youth football and into the pressure of playing for Liverpool. For 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha, that moment has arrived amid growing speculation over his future at Anfield.
Liverpool remain confident of finalising a new contract for the winger, despite reported interest from Arsenal and Bayern Munich.
Ngumoha turned 18 in August, making him eligible to sign a long-term deal with the club. According to The Times’ Paul Joyce, talks are continuing over a new five-year contract, which he has been able to sign since turning 18.
The player clearly craves a pathway, which explains his initial move from Chelsea. Julian Ward has reportedly made the agreement a priority since taking over from Richard Hughes as Liverpool’s sporting director.
If negotiations progress as expected, an announcement could arrive soon. Ngumoha’s desire for a clear pathway into first-team football was a key factor behind his initial move from Chelsea, and Liverpool will be keen to ensure he sees his future at Anfield.
Ngumoha is yet to start a Premier League game since turning 18, with his only start coming in Liverpool’s opening fixture of the campaign against Newcastle United.
However, his limited starting opportunities have not raised any significant concerns about his future, with Liverpool remaining firmly committed to his development.
The club continue to view Ngumoha as an important part of their long-term plans and have no intention of entertaining offers for his services.
That stance was made clear over the summer despite interest from Arsenal and Bayern Munich, who are understood to be monitoring the teenager’s progress.
Ngumoha impressed as Liverpool thrashed LASK 6-3 in the Champions League on Wednesday and could be in line to start against Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon. He has racked up seven appearances for Liverpool in all competitions this season.
