The return of Moises Caicedo has given Xabi Alonso the welcome boost he needs in midfield.

Xabi Alonso has issued a challenge to his Chelsea midfielders after lauding their performance against AFC Bournemouth.
Chelsea's emphatic 5-1 win over Bournemouth secured their first Premier League win since August 30, and the midfield played a key role in the result.
With the absence of Reece James, who has now undergone minor knee surgery and is expected to be sidelined until the New Year, Moises Caicedo returned to the Chelsea side and was partnered with Jordan Henderson in the midfield pivot, with Romeo Lavia settling for an initial place on the bench.
Henderson netted his first goal for the club in just two minutes, striking from the edge of the area off the post and into the back of the net. He doubled his tally 20 minutes from time with a stunning free-kick, rolling back the years as the 36-year-old showed exactly what he is capable of.
Caicedo's return helped Chelsea close the midfield gaps against the Cherries, and Alonso heaped praise on his performance, saying he showed exactly what they had been missing.
As Chelsea head into the final months of 2026, Alonso will hope his side can keep improving and deliver on his tactical ideas, even without club captain James.
The midfield is key to how Alonso wants the team to move from defence to attack, and he has challenged his midfielders to take the next step, which they are actively working towards.
“The midfielders need to take in a game many, many, many, many decisions," Alonso told reporters. "Small ones that look meaningless, but they are very significant, so that means they are always thinking one step ahead of the game.
"I think that Moi, Hendo, Rom and Barco are working for that, and when that works, normally the team works better.
"They did really well the other day with Hendo and Moi, and they choose the right decision because normally when they do well they help the team around because they are in the middle of everything and you need to be enjoying that responsibility that you have there in the middle.”
Chelsea's next task is Everton, who are unbeaten in the league so far this season, with two wins and four draws in their opening six games.
Who will start remains unclear. Caicedo is certain to start, while Henderson and Lavia will compete for the second spot alongside the Ecuadorian.
Alonso could look to maintain continuity in his team and select the same starting XI he used against Bournemouth.
The Spaniard believes Chelsea can cope with James' absence, particularly until the November international break. They still have Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Manchester United to play in October.
Alonso has also insisted that the loss of James in midfield will not affect their January transfer plans. Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott is set to be available for a 'significant' price, with the Blues having offers rejected in the summer window. His potential arrival at Stamford Bridge would offer Chelsea another dimension in the middle of the park.
