Persistent knee problems that begin during pre-season can be managed through training and limited match involvement for several weeks. When symptoms eventually become too much to continue in that way, a scan often leads to a decision for further intervention. A clean-up procedure is one option that allows the issue to be addressed without a more extensive operation.
Players who remain available for the majority of sessions can still see their overall integration affected by ongoing discomfort. Withdrawal from international duty provides a clear signal that the problem has progressed beyond routine management. The absence of a firm return date leaves the recovery timeline open until further assessments are completed.
Previous experiences with similar descriptions of procedures show that the label “minor clean-up” does not always predict the length of absence. Comparisons between cases are limited when the specific structures involved are not disclosed. Each recovery depends on the individual findings and the subsequent rehabilitation process.
Arsenal have confirmed that Selina Cerci has undergone a knee procedure after a persistent issue. Renee Slegers said the problem had troubled the forward since pre-season and eventually required further action.
“She has been available, she has trained the majority of training sessions with the team … But it became too much and with Germany they did a scan and the best solution going forward was to clean it up,” Slegers said.
Cerci had played only 40 minutes for Arsenal this season and withdrew from the Germany squad on 8 October. The club has not disclosed the exact damage found, the precise procedure performed, which knee was operated on, or whether the issue relates to her previous ACL injury. Slegers described the operation as a “clean-up” and said the forward will be unavailable “for a while”, with no firm return date given.
Cerci suffered an ACL injury in 2022 while at Turbine Potsdam. After returning with Köln, she experienced further knee problems that the German club linked to the earlier injury in November 2023. The current procedure follows that history, though no connection has been confirmed.
The situation invites comparison with Leah Williamson’s “minor clean-up” in August 2025, which was initially expected to keep her out for weeks rather than months. Williamson did not return until mid-December, 114 days after the announcement. Arsenal have not indicated whether the two procedures involved similar structures.
Cerci joined Arsenal in the summer on a free transfer from Hoffenheim after scoring 34 goals in 47 appearances. Her limited minutes this season have been partly attributed to the knee issue she was managing. The clean-up now places her recovery at the centre of the forward line’s planning.
Slegers’ comments confirm that the decision was taken once the symptoms could no longer be managed through training alone. The lack of a specific timeline means the focus remains on the rehabilitation process. Cerci’s return will depend on how the knee responds in the coming weeks.
