Strikers who contribute significantly in a title-winning season can still face questions about their role once a new campaign begins. Limited starts in the Premier League, even when international form remains strong, create space for uncertainty. Clubs that pursue alternative attacking options over the summer add another layer to those discussions.
Ongoing interest in a different forward can raise doubts about long-term plans for the existing squad. When that interest continues into the following window, intermediaries begin assessing possible destinations. A separation that suits both the player and the club becomes more plausible if another signing remains a priority.
Destinations in Spain, the Premier League, Italy and Germany are among those under consideration once the process starts. Previous contact between clubs over related deals provides context for any renewed interest. The January window then becomes the point at which those conversations can turn into concrete enquiries.
Viktor Gyokeres is ready to quit Arsenal and is set to push for a January exit, according to TEAMtalk. Sources have told the outlet that frustration over his lack of Premier League starts is the main reason the £60 million-plus striker is considering his future.
Gyokeres arrived from Sporting CP in 2025 after Arsenal preferred him to Benjamin Sesko. He scored 21 goals, including 14 in the Premier League, during the title-winning campaign and helped the side reach the Champions League final. He is yet to start a Premier League game this season, with Kai Havertz the preferred option, though he scored four goals for Sweden during the recent Nations League break.
A second factor is Arsenal’s determination to explore a move for Julian Alvarez. The club spent much of the summer window in talks over the Argentine, and TEAMtalk reports that Arsenal remain hugely keen on him. That ongoing interest represents a significant problem for Gyokeres, as the potential arrival of Alvarez would make regular starts even harder to secure.
Intermediaries are already doing due diligence on prospective options ahead of January. Atletico Madrid remain interested, and TEAMtalk confirms that the Spanish side’s interest in Gyokeres was discussed with Arsenal when Atletico met Andrea Berta during the summer. Premier League clubs are also showing interest, along with teams in Italy and Germany.
Arsenal could be prepared to consider allowing Gyokeres to leave as they continue pushing to bring in another forward. With the player open to a departure and the club still keen to strengthen their attacking options, a January separation could suit both parties. Atletico are one possible route, but they are not the only destination under assessment.
The situation stems from Gyokeres’ reduced role this season and the continued pursuit of Alvarez. Whether a move materialises will depend on the offers that emerge and Arsenal’s progress in signing a replacement. The January window now represents the earliest opportunity for any departure to take place.
