Chelsea
Chelsea captain Reece James has had knee surgery, and the latest injury news suggests about three months out. It is a setback for Xabi Alonso, who has fewer midfield options before a busy Premier League football.
Recovery timeline and Alonso’s update
James hurt his knee in training and missed the 5-1 win over Bournemouth earlier this month. The midfielder, 26, then had a minor operation, which Chelsea confirmed on Friday. He has started his rehab with the medical team at Cobham. As reported by BBC, he should be out for about three months, which points to a return in mid-January. He last played on September 12 against Hull, so he has already missed several games.
Alonso said it would take longer than a few weeks and refused to say whether Reece James will be back before or after Christmas, adding only that time will tell. The manager said the recovery must be done properly so the player returns in top condition. He also said the whole squad is disappointed, James most of all, and that the captain will stay close to the group. Alonso does not expect the injury to push Chelsea into the transfer market in January.
James has had a long list of injuries since the 2022 World Cup, and they cost him several England tournaments. Last season he stayed fitter and played a big part in England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals this summer. They went on to win the bronze medal. He pulled out of the latest England squad and will miss the game against Croatia at Wembley in early November too.

Midfield and armband questions without Reece James
Xabi Alonso now plays James in midfield full time, so his absence leaves a clear gap in that area. Alonso has spoken about the value of a mix of personalities, skills and career stages in his squad. He believes the group is in a good place in that respect, which gives him some comfort while James recovers.
The armband is a second question for Alonso. Enzo Fernandez, last season’s vice-captain, left for Manchester City on September 1 in a £125m deal, a joint British record. Levi Colwill wore the armband against Brentford and Bournemouth. Alonso named Colwill among several players who take responsibility on the pitch. He said the rest of the squad respects whoever wears the armband, so he sees no problem there.

Fixtures and injuries test Chelsea’s depth
After the trip to Everton, Chelsea’s next league game is at home to London rivals Tottenham. A Carabao Cup trip to Liverpool follows, and then Manchester United visit Stamford Bridge in the Premier League. Reece James will miss all three matches, which makes this a testing spell for the squad.
Other injuries make the run harder. Striker Emmanuel Emegha is recovering from a hamstring strain and has yet to make his debut. Alonso ruled him out of the Everton game and called him very special when fit, praising his height, pace and movement. Winger Jamie Gittens is also out with an ankle problem, so Alonso has fewer wide options. Alonso has said a squad must be able to cope with injuries, and the next few weeks will test that idea.
