Glen Johnson Claims Liverpool Have A Player Who Could Become The Best The “Premier League’s Ever Seen”

Ex-Liverpool star Glen Johnson believes Jeremy Jacquet has the potential to be the “best centre-back the Premier League’s ever seen.”

Speaking to Betarades.gr, Johnson said that if the Frenchman continues on the same trajectory, the sky is the limit:

“Without a doubt, Jacquet is among the best CBs in the league. To be honest, I’d never seen him play before he made his way to the Premier League. I’d obviously heard things, but I’d never seen him play. Then obviously when I did see him play, I was like, ‘wow, how have I never seen that before?’ Like you’d think it would be a ram down and exit, like it is in the Premier League. But to me, he has everything. To be so young, he’s so good on the ball, so calm, proper athlete, quick, strong.”

“If he keeps improving, he could literally probably end up being the best centre-back the Premier League’s ever seen. Of course, players like Virgil, they can’t be replaced. But you can get very good players that can perform. So you wouldn’t want him to replace van Dijk; you’d like to keep them both together. You know what I mean. So yeah, it’s not about replacing van Dijk, but Jacquet can sort of fill that void in terms of, like, a big character that can dominate strikers the way Virg does. The longer you keep them two together, the longer you have Liverpool rubbing their hands together.”

Jacquet’s start to life at the club has been phenomenal

When the Reds beat Chelsea to the centre-back’s signature last January, many felt that the Merseysiders had landed a big talent. You don’t spend £60m on a player and not expect a decent return on your investment.

There were, however, concerns about Jacquet’s lack of experience. After all, he had only made 37 appearances for Rennes in the French top flight.

For that reason, most assumed that it would take some time for the 21-year-old to settle in. As it turned out, the adaptation to the Premier League was seamless.

Liverpool will be keen to play down the hype

Johnson has made a very bold prediction about Jacquet, and you do need to be careful when you talk about young players. Jacquet has certainly exceeded all expectations so far, and he may well go on to have a stellar career at Anfield.

However, it has to be pointed out that the defender has only played 9 matches for his new club. He will likely make mistakes over the course of this season, and the club will want to keep his feet firmly on the ground.

Even so, it’s hard not to get excited by what we have seen from Jacquet. He could potentially be a stalwart of the Reds’ defence for many years to come.
