Loris Karius
Loris Karius
A former Liverpool player is continuing to rebuild his career after receiving some huge praise from the German media following his latest performance.
The player endured a difficult spell on Merseyside, but he is now starting to show why he was once regarded so highly.
His current side may be struggling in the Bundesliga, but his individual performances have been a real positive, with Saturday’s defeat to Mainz providing another example of his importance.
Despite losing 1-0 at home, Loris Karius was named man of the match after producing several important saves to keep his team in the contest.
German outlet BILD was full of praise for his display, describing him as ‘world-class again’.
The report explained that the score-line could have been much worse without his contribution, highlighting two crucial one-on-one saves in the opening minute alone.
WAZ also gave him the highest possible player rating of one, crediting him with preventing Mainz from scoring more goals before half-time.
The outlet highlighted his ability to deal with several clear-cut chances, while he also produced an excellent intervention against Sheraldo Becker after the break.
WAZ added that he was powerless to prevent the winning goal, describing him as comfortably his team’s best performer on the day.
For many supporters, the goalkeeper remains associated with the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid, when two costly mistakes contributed to the Reds’ 3-1 defeat.
Karius never played for Liverpool again, spending time on loan at Besiktas and Union Berlin before leaving when his contract expired in 2022.
He later joined Newcastle United as a back-up option and made a rare appearance in the 2023 Carabao Cup final against Manchester United. Despite a 2-0 defeat, he could not be blamed for either goal.
Seeking regular football, Karius moved to Schalke in early 2025 and helped the club win promotion back to the Bundesliga last season.
Their return to the top flight has proved challenging, but the goalkeeper is doing his best to keep them competitive.
While Schalke still have work to do, Karius is showing that his career is far from finished.
It is a brilliant story of how a new environment can reignite a player’s career and fortunes.
