Emi Martinez (jaw)

Martinez went straight to hospital on Saturday, conscious as he left the stadium. The World Cup winner has had to undergo surgery on his jaw, which Chelsea have since confirmed has been successful.

Martinez himself has confirmed he will be out for a few weeks. Reports say the timescale will be 40 days, which will see Martinez miss the next six matches. He will also miss the November break with Argentina.

Emmanuel Emegha (muscle injury)

Since his £23m move from Strasbourg, Netherlands international Emegha has not made his Chelsea debut. The striker is sidelined once again with another injury, suffering multiple issues since arriving.

Emegha played in behind-closed-doors friendlies against Crawley and Bromley, but injury stopped him from going on tour to Asia and Australia. This week, Alonso confirmed he is still a few weeks away.

Jamie Gittens (ankle)

Gittens, who enjoyed a brilliant summer with Chelsea, has failed to start a single game under Xabi Alonso. Then, more misery. Starting for England’s U21 side, he limped off and was spotted on crutches.

This week, Matt Law claims that Alonso’s slip of the tongue saw the manager say the winger will be out of action for months, before changing that to weeks. It looks as if Gittens will be on the sidelines for a while.

Pep Chavarria (unknown)

Chavarria was due to start on Saturday, but shortly before the game, he picked up an injury and it saw Jorrel Hato come in. The Netherlands star, who had started poorly this season, was superb at Everton.

After the 2-0 win over Everton, Alonso confirmed that Chavarria will be undergoing tests on Sunday to see what the problem is. Hopefully, it is nothing serious and he can play against Liverpool next week.

Malo Gusto (virus)

The same goes for Gusto, though his absence does not directly affect the starting XI. The right-back was missing from the squad on Saturday due to a virus. Pedro Neto has been shining on the right, anyway.

The last two games have seen Chelsea use more of a 4-4-2 system, but Josh Acheampong has been inch-perfect. Gusto has fallen down the pecking order, and his virus is not the only thing stopping him.
