NFL head coach makes embarrassing mistake during in-game interview

Usually, when an NFL head coach does a sideline interview during a game, it is a completely innocuous event. The reporter asks some normal questions, the coach doesn’t say all that much, and they both go on their way.

That wasn’t the case with New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn at halftime of this afternoon’s 26-19 loss to the New England Patriots. For a coach on the hot seat, Glenn did himself no favors with an incredibly embarrassing mistake.

Glenn did not realize his team was kicking off

----------------------------------------------

With the Jets trailing the Patriots 17-3 at intermission, CBS sideline reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala asked Glenn about how his team manages to finish off drives and get back in the game. After giving a boiler plate response, Glenn closed it out by saying he was looking forward to getting the ball to start the third quarter,

“The good thing is, we get the ball. We get a chance to go move it and finish,” Glenn said, before suggesting the defense would then force a turnover and get the ball back to the Jets’ offense.

There was only one problem: the Jets were not receiving the second half kickoff. In fact, as CBS finished airing Glenn’s comments, it immediately cut to the Patriots running their first play of the third quarter.

An inexplicable error

---------------------

We’re not sure when Glenn spoke to Kinkhabwala, but if he did so as his team was coming back onto the field at halftime and still didn’t realize the Jets were about to go on defense, oh boy. Needless to say this is a bad look for a coach who is now 2-4 on the season and 5-18 in his tenure with Gang Green.

We’ll see if Glenn addresses this miscue after the game. Perhaps he has a good explanation for misspeaking, but right now, nothing we can think of would suffice.
