Chelsea Eye£116m Liverpool Playmaker: Should Alonso Push For Him?

Chelsea transfer news

Chelsea–Liverpool Transfer Mystery

Chelsea’s attacking ambitions under Xabi Alonso will depend on finding the right balance between individual brilliance and a coherent team structure. The Spaniard knows that possession alone cannot unlock stubborn defences, particularly when opponents crowd the central areas and deny creative players time on the ball.

Cole Palmer remains a major source of invention for Chelsea, while Estêvão offers youthful flair and the ability to threaten defenders in one-on-one situations. Alonso must decide whether his existing options can deliver consistently or whether another specialist playmaker would give his system greater variety.

His experience at Bayer Leverkusen offers a useful reference point. Alonso helped develop Florian Wirtz into one of Europe’s most exciting attacking midfielders, with the German registering 18 goals and 20 assists across 49 appearances during the 2023/24 campaign. Leverkusen won the Bundesliga without losing a league match, and Wirtz played a central role in that success.

Liverpool subsequently paid £116 million to sign the German international in 2025. The transfer brought enormous expectations, yet adapting to English football has proved challenging. Wirtz has faced criticism over his output, although his technical ability and capacity to create opportunities remain valuable assets.

His Premier League numbers have not told the whole story. Wirtz has continued to produce inventive passes and dangerous deliveries, while his recent performances have offered encouragement. He supplied an assist during Liverpool’s 6-3 Champions League victory over LASK on 14 October, demonstrating the creative qualities that made him such a coveted signing.

According to TEAMtalk’s report published on 10 October, Chelsea are monitoring Wirtz, with Alonso keen to work with his former player again. However, Liverpool have shown no intention of selling the midfielder to a Premier League rival. TEAMtalk subsequently reported on 18 October that Wirtz had no intention of leaving Anfield for Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea transfer news: Should Alonso push Chelsea to sign Wirtz despite Liverpool’s stance?

Chelsea should pursue Wirtz only if Alonso believes he can give the German a clearly defined role. His vision, close control and ability to find passes between defensive lines would suit a possession-heavy approach, particularly against deep defensive blocks.

His £116m transfer fee illustrates the scale of the investment Liverpool made, so Chelsea would probably face a substantial financial hurdle. Wirtz remains under contract until 2030, strengthening Liverpool’s negotiating position. His weekly salary has not been reliably established here, so assigning a figure would be misleading.

There is a tactical question, too. Palmer already occupies Chelsea’s most influential creative spaces, meaning Alonso would need to establish how both players could operate without limiting each other’s freedom. Wirtz’s pressing and physical adaptation also require continued attention.

Alonso has good reason to admire Wirtz, but Chelsea should not treat his availability as a realistic assumption. Liverpool have little incentive to sell an expensive young playmaker while he continues adapting. Chelsea would be better served by monitoring his development and pursuing the transfer only if Liverpool’s position changes and the tactical fit remains convincing.
