You have to do a lot to get ejected from an NFL game. Spitting on one of your opponents certainly qualifies.

Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was ejected from Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders after he spit on Raiders tight end Brock Bowers late in the second quarter. A well-known trash talker, Gardner-Johnson let his saliva fly, which earned him the boot.

Gardner-Johnson gets the gate

The first half action at Allegiant Stadium was fast and physical, and the game is tied 13-13 at intermission. It’s not a surprise that tensions on the field have been high at times.

Still, there’s no excuse for spitting on another player, especially right in front of one of the officials. Gardner-Johnson did just that though, in a move that CBS play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz called “about as disrespectful as it gets.”

It’s unclear what was said before the spitting occurred, but there’s no excuse for it.

More punishment is on its way

The CBS studio crew lambasted Gardner-Johnson at halftime, with legendary Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher calling the act “selfish” and former longtime NFL wide receiver Nate Burleson labeling it “unprofessional.”

A 15-yard penalty and an ejection are not going to be the only penalties Gardner-Johnson receives for his spit take. A fine is definitely forthcoming, and it just remains to be seen whether the NFL will tack on a suspension as well.

Meanwhile, the Bills will try to win without the veteran defensive back. You can catch the second half of Bills-Raiders right now on CBS.
