TAMPA – It was with little fanfare that Chris Boswell put his name atop the Pittsburgh Steelers’ franchise record for most career field goals, as it came while they were trailing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Boswell tied Gary Anderson’s mark of 309 field goals with a 52-yarder as time expired in the first half and broke it on a 39-yarder in the fourth quarter of a 26-19 overtime win Sunday at Raymond James Stadium.
The 12-year veteran placekicker converted four field goals against the Bucs, including a 58-yarder to tie the game at 16-16 with 1 minute, 55 seconds remaining and a 20-yarder to give the Steelers their first lead 34 seconds later. He also missed a 48-yard attempt, which sailed wide left after a bad snap in the second quarter.
Boswell is 13 of 17 on field goal attempts this season, including four from 50 yards or longer, and 12 of 12 on extra points.
Anderson, who played for the Steelers from 1982-94, holds the team scoring record with 1,343 points. Boswell is on pace to break that mark this season, as he now has 1,301 points through six games.
