After a long period of waiting, the New York Knicks appear to have reached a conclusion regarding their final roster spot. Having waived veteran guard Bruce Brown after an intense battle over the training camp period, New York has signed James Wiseman to finalize their 14-man roster ahead of the regular season.

Bruce Brown was among the several veterans who signed training camp deals with the Knicks this summer. While there was a general belief that Brown was more than deserving of a standard contract, especially in light of his overall impact, the Knicks had other priorities.

According to most reports, James Wiseman was the frontrunner for the final roster spot. In this regard, seeing Bruce Brown lose out doesn’t come as a shock. However, during his recent media availability, Knicks head coach Mike Brown explained why New York made the decision to choose Wiseman over Brown. He began by praising Brown’s abilities, stating:

“Bruce, he’s a winner. He shows a level of toughness and versatility; not just defensively, he can guard one through four, but even offensively. He can initiate the offense. Our point guard’s not one that has to come down every play and break his guy down and make the game easier for everyone else.”

“ We have a system where we play out of concepts, and Bruce is good enough to initiate the offense, or he’s good enough to be off the ball. So he fits in with what we want to play on both ends while giving us versatility on both ends. Having a chance to get to know him, he seems like a good guy. He seems like he knows a lot of our guys because he was in the same class as a few of them. So it was tough from that standpoint.”

As Mike Brown mentioned, Bruce Brown is a high-impact player. While he is more than capable on the offensive end of the floor, Brown primarily influences the result of a game with his defensive intensity and overall hustle.

Considering that these traits made him one of the most valuable pieces on the Nuggets‘ roster during the team’s title push in 2023, the 30-year-old would have been a phenomenal addition to New York’s core. Unfortunately, the team needed something else, as the head continued:

“But when you have a guy that’s 25 years old, that has the length and the athleticism and the talent as a James Wiseman, because KAT’s not athletic like that, and Andre was once that; he still has some of it, but to have that at 25 years old, especially with where we’re at as a group, you look for guys that ‘coulda shoulda,’ but at his age maybe he still can be a ‘coulda shoulda.’ That vertical threat at the rim, the vertical threat defensively, how good he runs; you welcome that at his size and age and athleticism.”

As constructed, the Knicks’ roster features solid depth at virtually every position. But when it comes to the big man rotation, New York seems to fall short.

With the departure of Mitchell Robinson, Knicks superstar Karl-Anthony Towns is required to shoulder a tremendous burden on both ends of the floor. Although New York added Andre Drummond to support him, it is evident that Drummond isn’t impactful enough defensively to compensate for Robinson’s absence.

In this regard, signing James Wiseman seems quite reasonable. Although the former lottery pick has struggled to establish himself in the NBA, Wiseman’s preseason averages of 8.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks per game on 81.3% shooting from the field in 11.5 minutes per night have been promising.

As mentioned earlier, the Knicks’ preference for James Wiseman was well-documented. Thus, even though there was some speculation that New York intended to create another roster spot by trading either Pacome Dadiet or Tyler Kolek ahead of the deadline, the Knicks were not successful in this venture.

Although he failed to secure a place on the Knicks’ roster, Bruce Brown will be one of the most valuable free agents on the market. While there is no certainty that he will wind up on a new team ahead of the new season, he could become a critical addition on a team later in the campaign.
