Buffalo Bills safety CJ Gardner-Johnson has "sincerely apologized" for his actions in Sunday's Week 6 game against the Raiders after being ejected for spitting on Las Vegas tight end Brock Bowers.

Gardner-Johnson, 28, committed the disgusting act towards his opponent following an incomplete pass from Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins with 15 seconds remaining in the first half, when he approached a group of Las Vegas offensive players and spat at Bowers while his back was facing him.

Unfortunately for the Bills star, he did so right in front of the referee, who promptly threw a flag and issued him an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty before ejecting him from the game, and now finds himself at risk of receiving a one-game suspension.

When discussing the altercation with reporters after the match, Gardner-Johnson downplayed the spitting itself, characterizing it as a "heat of the moment" consequence of football competition, claiming it "wasn't nothing egregious" and was just two passionate sides "chirping".

The Buffalo defensive back, however, has since issued a lengthy, heartfelt apology on his Instagram Stories, addressing not only his teammates and coaches for letting his emotions get the better of him, but Bowers, too.

"I want to take a moment to address my actions and sincerely apologize to my opponent, my teammates, my organization, and everyone who supports me," Gardner-Johnson wrote late Sunday night.

"My passion and competitive nature have always been a huge part of who I am, but I also understand that there is a line that should never be crossed. The gesture I made toward my opponent was inappropriate, unnecessary, and not a reflection of the respect I have for him or this game.

"There is no excuse for my actions, and I take full accountability. No matter how emotional or intense the competition gets, I have to hold myself to a higher standard.

"To my opponent, I sincerely apologize. We compete hard between those lines, but respect should always remain at the forefront."

Gardner-Johnson went on to state that "one moment does not define my character, but how I respond to that moment matters," before rounding out his apology by insisting that his actions will "speak louder than my words moving forward."

While his apology appears sincere and he takes full accountability for his behavior, Gardner-Johnson has also received significant backlash for his actions, with many fans urging the Bills to cut ties with the NFL star.

"CJ Gardner-Johnson all smiles after getting kicked out of the game for Bills against Raiders. Clown should be unemployed yesterday," one fan wrote on X, along with a video of the Bills star grinning as he walked to the locker room.

"Please get CJ Gardner Johnson off my team right now. The defense hasn’t looked this good all season. Can't be a coincidence. @BuffaloBills," said another, while a third user fumed: "@BuffaloBills I’ve seen enough, you gotta trade CJ Gardner-Johnson before the game ends."
