The Kansas City Chiefs cruised to a comfortable 22-6 win over the winless Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. But Patrick Mahomes‘ lone interception drew more attention than the actual margin of victory. After the game, the 31-year-old quarterback openly blamed himself for the mistake.

The Kansas City defense completely locked down Los Angeles, giving up just 259 yards and keeping them out of the end zone the entire game. On offense, Kenneth Walker III carried the heavy load, rushing for 128 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.

But the biggest talking point of the day was a rare blunder by Mahomes in the red zone. With the Chiefs sitting on the 2-yard line on third-and-goal, Mahomes threw a pass toward Andrew Armstrong, who was elevated from the practice squad.

Chargers cornerback Cam Hart picked it off easily in the back of the end zone. Replays showed Travis Kelce was waiting wide open in the end zone near the sideline, but Mahomes didn’t notice him. However, the Chargers couldn’t do anything with the turnover and failed to score on the next drive.

Mahomes owned the throw at his postgame press conference, saying, “Yeah. Obviously, the ball, you can’t throw like that. Um, I mean, the look wasn’t what we wanted, but there we had an option, and it was (Andrew) Armstrong, and it happened faster than I expected it. So instead of just kind of staying with it and throwing it in the end, I kind of started scrambling, and then I did, like, what you’re not supposed to do.”

He added, “I kind of was trying to throw it away but at the same time, like, trying to give him a chance, and then getting hit left it short. And so you just can’t do that.”

Kelce, meanwhile, limped off after a tackle by Chargers linebacker Daiyan Henley, got his ankle wrapped, and returned. Chiefs coach Andy Reid gave a positive update afterward.

“Kelce tweaked his ankle there but continued to play. It might be a little sore tomorrow, but he did a nice job tonight,” Reid said.

Kelce finished the game with four catches for 53 yards. Meanwhile, Mahomes completed 23 of 30 passes for 272 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception, finishing with an 89.9 passer rating. He also ran five times for 16 yards.

That lone interception continues a frustrating trend for Mahomes, who has thrown one every other game. Through five matches this season, he has thrown three total interceptions alongside 1,309 passing yards and nine touchdowns.
