Manchester City must consider resting Marc Guehi after nightmare display
Speaking ahead of Manchester City’s 3-2 win over Ipswich Town, Enzo Maresca told the media that a host of Manchester City players will need to be rested throughout City’s hectic schedule. Maresca specifically mentioned Erling Haaland, Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernandez, Marc Guehi and Ruben Dias as players who will need rest at some point this season. Watching Guehi’s performance against Ipswich Town, the England international looks to be in need of a rest and hopefully that can come this week for Guehi.
Marc Guehi wasn’t anywhere near his best as Manchester City held on against Ipswich Town.
Manchester City took the lead in the 19th minute against Ipswich Town through Phil Foden. Their lead would only last two minutes as Daizen Maeda equalised for Gary O’Neil’s side in the 21st minute. Abdul Ouattara played a ball from the right behind the City defence and Marc Guehi drifted from his defensive position to play Maeda onside. The Japanese international then left Guehi on the floor as he cleverly used his body to shrug off Guehi’s challenge before calmly slotting past Gianluigi Donnarumma at his near post to make it 1-1.
Marc Guehi did recover from his early error to put in a solid performance. However, there would be one final blot on Guehi’s copybook which would make the closing stages of Saturday’s match a test for Manchester City. Guehi would concede a late penalty when he fouled Ipswich Town winger Abdul Fatawu. Initially, the referee waved play on before a penalty was awarded after a VAR check. Zian Flemming converted the spot kick in the 90th minute to make it 3-2. Fortunately, Enzo Maresca’s side held on to their lead to pick up their seventh consecutive win in the Premier League.
Marc Guehi looks like he needs a rest and hopefully he can get that this week.
Marc Guehi’s performance on Saturday wasn’t his best. Up until the match against Ipswich Town, Guehi had been in impressive form to begin the 2026-27 season. However, rather than blame Guehi for the fight that Manchester City found themselves in, Enzo Maresca’s comments about a group of players needing rest did come to mind after the match. Guehi does look like he will benefit from a brief rest.
Marc Guehi has carried a heavy workload through the summer with England and Manchester City so far this season. Guehi also featured prominently over the recent international break for England. Looking at Guehi’s display on Saturday, a period of rest is needed. He looked weary and a rest should do him the world of good.
Manchester City face AEK Athens on Tuesday night in their third UEFA Champions League league phase fixture at the Etihad Stadium. Perhaps that game is the ideal opportunity to give Guehi a rest. He does look to need it. He isn’t alone in that boat in the City squad. However, Guehi’s performance against Ipswich Town was well below his usual high standards. You do sense that having a game off to rest and recover could do him the world of good.
