Jeremy Jacquet has barely had time to settle into life on Merseyside, yet the 21-year-old centre-back already looks like one of Liverpool’s most important players.
Since completing a £55 million move from Stade Rennais in February, with a further £5 million in potential add-ons, Jacquet has slotted into Andoni Iraola’s defence with remarkable ease.
His switch was formally completed on 1 July, and he made his competitive debut in the 2-2 draw at Newcastle United on the opening weekend of the season.
He has started six of Liverpool’s seven Premier League matches so far this term, missing out on just one from the opening XI.
That form was recognised this month when he was named Liverpool’s Standard Chartered Player of the Month for August and September, finishing ahead of Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak in a fan vote.
Jacquet was part of a Liverpool back line that kept three consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League in September, form that also earned him a nomination for the division’s own Player of the Month award alongside Isak.
Now, according to WhoScored.com, Jacquet has delivered another standout defensive showing.
The Frenchman made three interceptions inside the penalty area during Liverpool’s Premier League match at Brentford on Saturday, the most by any player in a single game in the competition this season.
Liverpool trailed at the break after Brentford took a 44th-minute lead, with the hosts also having a player sent off in first-half stoppage time. Goals either side of the hour mark, at 62 and 70 minutes, turned the match around for Iraola’s side, sealing a 2-1 away win.
Jacquet started alongside Virgil van Dijk in central defence, with Ronald Araujo and Milos Kerkez completing the back four. His interceptions inside his own box were central to keeping Brentford at bay as Liverpool chased the game.
The result arrived after a response was needed. Liverpool had lost 3-0 at home to Manchester City in their previous league outing.
His reading of the game has been a feature since his Ligue 1 days at Rennes, where he developed a reputation as an aggressive, front-foot defender comfortable stepping out to intercept passes.
Liverpool’s recruitment staff identified that trait as central to his profile before signing him.
