"A Lot of Relaxed Faces" - Marc Guehi Enforces Belief in Manchester City Despite Independent Panel Guilty Verdict

Marc Guehi has spoken about the mood at Manchester City ahead of Tuesday's UEFA Champions League clash with AEK Athens, following the club's guilty verdict.

Guehi, 26, is one of four players in Enzo Maresca's captaincy group for the 2026/27 season, alongside Ruben Dias, Erling Haaland and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

An independent commission published its opinion on 29 September, finding City guilty on 114 of 115 charges of breaching the Premier League's financial rules between 2009/10 and 2017/18. The club declared their innocence and lodged a comprehensive appeal at 7pm on 1 October.

Maresca's side have played three times since the appeal was lodged, beating Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield, losing 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday and beating Ipswich Town 3-2 on Saturday. Tuesday's visit of AEK Athens is the third match of the UEFA Champions League group-phase.

There are a lot of relaxed faces to be honest, because we have a lot of trust and belief in the football club: Guehi

Speaking ahead of City's upcoming European game in a press conference on Monday, Guehi said: "It's been nice, good! You get to see a lot of togetherness, to be honest. Team spirit's been really fantastic from every single person, player, especially staff, and the fans that are backing us. It's been great to see!"

Guehi was on England duty when the news of the verdict broke and said: "The club notified everyone straight away, so we were pretty calm. There's a lot of relaxed faces to be honest, because we have a lot of trust and belief in the football club, and what's been going on here.

"It can be very easy to listen to the noise and be affected by everything going on, but I'm so happy to see the team spirit, bonding, everyone taking to what's happening and just focussing on the football."

England head coach Thomas Tuchel said in September that Manchester City's off-field situation was not a distraction for the players involved with the national team.

Guehi: I just want to be someone that's part of future success

Guehi was then asked why he has come to trust the club over the situation. The defender added: "Ever since I got to the club, the club have been nothing but fantastic with me! The support that I've had, even tough times on the pitch and off the pitch.

"I'm aware of the success the club's already had in the past and I just want to be someone that's part of future success.

"You just get the sense from everyone at the football club that it's a family football club, people love one another and just want to do the best for eachother. I can only talk from my experience!"

The commission found that schemes involving commercial contracts had artificially inflated Manchester City's revenues and reduced costs by more than £900 million across the period covered by the charges. The club has stated that it holds "a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence".

The sanctions phase has not yet begun, and sources suggest full resolution may not arrive until 2028 or 2029. Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester United are among the clubs reported to be preparing civil claims, with a combined value reported at around £800 million.

Maresca said before the Liverpool game that he was "very calm" and that "we trust, completely, the club", in an interview with the club's official website. Dias made similar remarks this month in his own pre-match press conference.

Manchester City are top of the Premier League and the defeat to PSG was their first of the 2026/27 season in any competition. The Blues host AEK Athens at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night in the Champions League, before travelling to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday 24 October.
