The Philadelphia Eagles were without star quarterback Jalen Hurts on Sunday after the team revealed that he has been dealing with a blood clot in his calf.

There was initially optimism that Hurts could return sooner rather than later, but ultimately, he was placed on IR, forcing him to miss at least the next four games, including Sunday’s loss to the Carolina Panthers. However, on Monday, the Eagles announced that Hurts would miss the remainder of the season as he undergoes treatment.

“Over the last few days, Jalen Hurts has received comprehensive medical evaluations by physician experts. In the interest of transparency, we are providing additional information on the diagnosis and treatment plan related to his condition,” the team said in a statement.

“Jalen was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis. After further testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is a deep vein thrombosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli. he is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations. His treatment should only involve anticoagulation (i.e., blood thinners’).

“During this time, he will not be allowed to participate in any contact activities, including football. Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery. We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects.

“We are thinking of Jalen and looking forward to a strong recovery.”

While the statement says that Hurts was initially diagnosed in London, where the Eagles faced the Jacksonville Jaguars, it’s unclear whether the diagnosis was after or before the game.

However, a follow-up report reveals that the former Super Bowl MVP did, in fact, play after being hospitalized, and that he was also playing on zero sleep.

“Eagles QB Jalen Hurts, who is out for the season after several blood clots were revealed in his lungs, has been undergoing tests for days,” ESPN’s Ian Rapoport reported on Monday.

It’ll be interesting to see if the franchise is forced to follow up on its decision to allow the quarterback to play.
