Dallas Mavericks make decision on longtime veteran's future

The Dallas Mavericks have made the decision on the situation of Dwight Powell and his contract.

According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Mavericks are waiving Powell ahead of the season opener against the Houston Rockets.

The fan favorite center leaves the team after Dallas tried to find ways to keep him with rumors going around that the Mavericks could cut young center Moussa Cisse to keep Powell.

In the end, Powell leaves his longtime team with them opting to choose the 24-year-old center instead of the 35-year-old Canadian.

Powell was set to enter his 13th season with the Dallas Mavericks after signing an undisclosed deal at the end of September.

He was the only player the Mavericks had brought to training camp beyond their 15 players already on standard NBA contracts and their three two-way players.

Among the Mavericks' all-time leaders, Powell ranks fourth in career field goal percentage (.606), fifth in games played (763), sixth in offensive rebounds (1,187), sixth in total rebounds (3,251), and 10th in blocks (330).

Over 12 seasons with the team, Powell has averaged 6.5 points and 4.3 rebounds across 763 games.

In the end, despite Dallas trying to find a roster spot for him, the veteran center has been waived by the team and will have to look for opportunities elsewhere.
