Real Sociedad, Barcelona's only stumbling block in the league

Patri Guijarro needed just 55 seconds to put Barcelona ahead against hosts Real Sociedad. It had been 350 days since their last defeat. Then everything unravelled inside 45 minutes.

Historic Barcelona dominance over domestic and continental titles

Barcelona's current women's side rank among the most successful in the history of the game. They have lifted the domestic league title 11 times, the last seven in a row. Sitting top of the Spanish women's league table once again, they are on course for an eighth straight crown and a 12th in total.

A single slip-up denied Barcelona a perfect season in the league.

The team also lifted the Copa de la Reina 12 times, including the last three in a row and six of the last seven. They won the Spanish Super Cup in each of the last five editions, taking six of the seven stagings of the tournament. Add to that six consecutive Women's Champions League finals, four of which ended in triumph.

Barcelona dropped just a single point in the league last season. The blemish came in November 2025, a 1-0 defeat away to Real Sociedad. They won all 29 of their other matches to finish on 87 points. But for that one slip, they would have matched their historic 2021-2022 campaign, when they won every game in the domestic league.

40 matches unbeaten: Barcelona return to the stadium where they finally fell

Barcelona have been near-unstoppable since losing to Arsenal in the 2024-25 Champions League final. In the league, only Sociedad managed to beat them. They won the cup final against Atletico Madrid. Through five group-stage matches of the 2025-26 Champions League they dropped just one draw, away to Chelsea in England. Then came five knockout ties: a draw with Bayern Munich in Germany and four wins, including the 4-2 success in the second leg against Bayern. Two victories over Real Madrid followed, 6-0 and 6-2, before a 4-0 triumph over Lyon in the final. Add four wins in the 2025-26 Copa del Rey, with only a 0-0 draw away to Badalona, plus two wins over Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid in the Super Cup. That brings the side to 39 wins and two draws last season, with just a single loss, to Real Sociedad. The new campaign has started with eight straight wins, six in the league and two in the Champions League.

55 seconds enough to take the lead: then Sociedad's fightback turns the tables

350 days have passed since that defeat at Real Sociedad, a run of 40 matches unbeaten in which Barcelona racked up 38 wins and two draws. Now the La Liga fixture comes around again for the 2026-27 season, and Barcelona wanted to make up for last season's single-goal loss on the very same pitch.

Spain international Patri Guijarro needed just 55 seconds to put her side ahead inside the opening minute. But the hosts hit back. They were two goals up before the break.

Catalan possession in vain: Sociedad repeat the surprise

Barcelona dominated the second half, enjoying 68% possession and firing in nine shots on the hosts' goal. The hosts managed just one effort of their own. Yet every Catalan attempt came to nothing, and the match ended in another Real Sociedad win over Barcelona.

Sociedad have become a genuine stumbling block for a side that routinely tears opposition defences apart in the domestic league and the Champions League. Barcelona arrived on the back of a 7-0 thrashing of Real Madrid in the women's Clásico, a result that came just four days after they swept Roma aside 6-0 in Italy in the Champions League.

Quadruples, quintuples and sextuples: but Sociedad breaks the rule

Barcelona have been banging in fours, fives and sixes at home and in Europe. Since the defeat to Sociedad 350 days ago, their net has not been breached more than once in a single match, with four exceptions: the 6-2 win over Real Madrid, the 4-2 victories against Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich, and the 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

Zubieta stadium: a stumbling block threatening Barcelona's historic dominance

Real Sociedad, though, have emerged as a fresh thorn in Barcelona's side. The Instalaciones de Zubieta has become a house of horrors for a team that, over the last six years, has terrorised every side in Europe. Win there next season Barcelona must, before the ground hardens into a historical curse the Catalans cannot easily shake.
