New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn went viral on Sunday after his halftime interview made it sound like he didn’t know his team was kicking off to start the third quarter against the New England Patriots. But on Monday, Glenn insisted that there was no confusion at all.
Glenn said that his comments were misinterpreted, and that he was talking about what his offense would do once the defense got a stop. Still, it’s not a great look for a coach who is already facing plenty of pressure in New York.
Viral Halftime Interview
With the Jets trailing the Patriots 17-3 at halftime on Sunday, CBS sideline reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala asked Glenn how his team could finish drives and get back in the game.
“The good thing is, we get the ball. We get a chance to go move it and finish,” Glenn said, via Awful Announcing.
There was just one problem: the Jets weren’t receiving the second-half kickoff. In fact, as CBS finished airing Glenn’s comments, the broadcast cut to the Patriots running their first play of the third quarter.
Given his comments, it seemed like Glenn was unaware that his team would not be receiving the second-half kickoff.

‘The Conversation Was Talking About the Offense’
On Monday, Glenn pushed back on the idea that he didn’t know who was getting the ball.
“No, I actually talked about just the offense,” Glenn said, via Howie Kussoy of the New York Post. “I think they were talking about sustaining drives, and my conversation with them is when the offense gets the ball back, man, we want to be able to sustain a drive and go score.”
“Then when the defense gets back on, we want to make sure we stop them and get the ball back to our offense. That’s what I was talking about when it comes to that. The conversation was talking about the offense at that time,” Glenn continued.
To be fair to Glenn, things played out pretty much the way he described. The Jets forced a punt on the Patriots’ opening drive of the second half and then scored on a touchdown pass to rookie receiver Omar Cooper.
New York eventually pulled within 17-13, but the Patriots held on for the win.
