There has been a lot of commentary and news since it was announced that Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts will miss the rest of the season due to blood clots in his lungs.
The Eagles have been rightly criticized for how they handled the situation. They cleared him to play Week 5 in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars despite the clear health concerns.
A few people have stuck their foot in their mouth commenting on the situation. Having an opinion on someone’s health is risky in any situation, but NFL insider Tom Pelissero missed the mark when he shared his thoughts on the Eagles’ QB.

The Ringer’s Pelissero shared that after Hurts was diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in London, doctors told him not to sleep as a precaution. Pelissero started his post on X with “How committed is Jalen Hurts to football?”.
He disclosed that the Oklahoma product was awake for 36 hours before playing against the Jaguars.
How committed is Jalen Hurts to football? After initially being diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in London, doctors told him not to sleep as a precaution, so he had been awake for roughly 36 hours when he started against the Jaguars, throwing for 220 yards and a TD. https://t.co/rAm0xGNHk0

Pellisero was commending Hurts on his toughness. The problem is that this isn’t a positive story about commitment. Hurts was dealing with an injury that could’ve been potentially very dangerous. The “do anything to win attitude shouldn’t be applauded in this situation.
The NFL is the most “Macho” professional sports league, and its players are incredible athletes, but they’re still human beings. These players can still get seriously hurt, and applauding someone for putting their health at risk to play a football game isn’t something that we should do. All the criticism should be heaped on the Eagles for putting someone in this situation within their organization.
Hurts is expected to make a full recovery once he’s off blood thinners.
