Jamie Carragher weighs in on Rio Ngumoha’s Liverpool contract situation

Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha has addressed speculation linking him with a potential move to Arsenal, insisting his focus remains on developing at Anfield.

The 18-year-old winger has attracted interest from several European clubs, including Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, while Arsenal have reportedly been monitoring his progress.

Ngumoha is under contract with Liverpool until June 2028, with the club having resisted interest in his services last summer.

Speaking after Liverpool’s recent comeback victory over Brentford, the teenager played down distractions as he continues to focus on his development with the Reds.

“To be fair, that is all with my agent now,” he told reporters at the Gtech Community Stadium. “I think it is all going well. I am not too sure. I just let my football do the talking at the end of the day.

“I enjoy playing, and all of that stuff is in the back of my mind really. I just play for the club, and hopefully I can carry on doing well.”

Ngumoha burst onto the scene in January 2025, making history as Liverpool’s youngest-ever FA Cup debutant during a comprehensive victory over Accrington Stanley. Since then, the winger has continued to establish himself in the first-team picture at Anfield.

Under head coach Andoni Iraola, the teenager has featured in five of Liverpool’s first seven Premier League fixtures this season, alongside three cup starts against Atletico Madrid, LASK and Tottenham.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the club must secure Ngumoha’s long-term future by tying him down to a new contract.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Carragher said: “Rio Ngmoha is one of the best young players in the country. He’s already in the England squad. Liverpool have to tie him down [to a new contract].

“He made a huge difference when he came on against Brentford. He said he’s close to signing a new contract, so hopefully they will get pen to paper very shortly.”

Following Mohamed Salah’s departure and the summer arrivals of Bradley Barcola and Victor Munoz, Ngumoha has been tasked with adapting from the left wing to the right. His growing role under Iraola offers Liverpool greater tactical flexibility as the club reshapes its attack.
