How William Saliba kept Harry Kane quiet– and why Ezri Konsa must step up

As Arsenal prepare for another heavyweight European meeting with Bayern Munich, William Saliba’s Champions League record against Harry Kane offers a compelling defensive blueprint. With Saliba sidelined, Ezri Konsa could be asked to carry that responsibility against England’s captain.

Harry Kane has built a career on making defenders uncomfortable. He can finish with either foot, dominate in the penalty area, drop into midfield to create chances and punish even the smallest lapse in concentration. For years, he was also a familiar problem for Arsenal, having spent the peak years of his Tottenham career tormenting their north London rivals.

But the Champions League meetings between Arsenal and Bayern Munich have told a more complicated story.

Across the three European encounters in which Kane faced an Arsenal side featuring William Saliba – the two quarter-final legs in April 2024 and the league-phase clash in November 2025 – Kane played all 270 minutes and recorded just one goal, four shots and one shot on target.

Crucially, his only goal came from the penalty spot in the first leg in April 2024. He did not score from open play in any of those three matches.

This does not mean Kane was completely absent from the games, but the figures illustrate just how limited his direct attacking output was across the three encounters.

The numbers behind the narrative

Kane’s three-match record against Arsenal during this period makes for striking reading:

270 minutes played

1 goal

0 goals from open play

4 total shots

1 shot on target

1 penalty scored

85 touches

5 touches in the opposition penalty area

The key distinction is between stopping Kane from scoring and stopping him from influencing a match. Kane still found ways to link play and threaten Arsenal, but the numbers show that clear shooting opportunities were scarce.

That is especially significant for a striker who can change a game with one touch. When Kane cannot consistently receive the ball in dangerous areas, turn towards goal or attack crosses in the box, Bayern lose one of their most reliable routes to goal.

Saliba’s contribution was not simply about winning physical duels. It was about maintaining the right distance, reading movement before the pass arrived and preventing Kane from turning small pockets of space into clear chances.

Arsenal’s collective pressing, midfield protection and defensive organisation also played an important part.

April 2024: A penalty, but little else in front of goal

The first leg at the Emirates ended 2–2. Bukayo Saka opened the scoring, Serge Gnabry equalised and Kane put Bayern ahead from the penalty spot after Leroy Sané’s powerful run into the area ended with Saliba conceding the spot-kick.

That moment matters. It would be inaccurate to describe Saliba’s entire performance as flawless or claim he completely shut Kane out. Kane scored, and Saliba was involved in the incident that led to the penalty.

But the broader picture was more encouraging for Arsenal. Kane finished the match with two shots, only one of which was on target. He did not score from open play.

In the return leg in Munich, Arsenal lost 1–0 and exited the competition. Kane again failed to score, recording two shots without testing the goalkeeper.

Bayern advanced, but the England striker did not find the net from open play across either leg.

That is the nuance behind Saliba’s record: Arsenal did not win the tie, yet Kane’s individual goal threat was contained far more effectively than his reputation might suggest.

November 2025: Arsenal’s defensive work reaches another level

The next meeting brought a much more emphatic result. Arsenal beat Bayern 3–1 at the Emirates, handing the German side their first defeat of the season.

Jurrien Timber headed Arsenal in front before Lennart Karl equalised. Second-half goals from Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli secured a memorable victory.

Kane, however, finished the night without registering a single shot. StatMuse’s match data records him with zero shots, zero shots on target and zero expected goals in 90 minutes. He had 30 touches, only two of them in Arsenal’s penalty area.

That is perhaps the clearest example of Arsenal limiting Kane’s threat. The striker was on the pitch for the entire match, yet he never managed to turn his involvement into an attempt on goal.

Saliba also produced a composed performance in possession. He completed 36 of his 38 passes – a completion rate of 94.7%, rounded to 95% – while helping Arsenal play out under pressure and maintain their defensive structure.

It was not a one-man operation. Arsenal’s midfield restricted Bayern’s supply, the defensive line managed space intelligently, and the team took advantage of mistakes at the other end.

But Saliba’s calmness and decision-making were important parts of a performance that left Kane without a shot.

Now the challenge falls to Ezri Konsa

Arsenal’s next meeting with Bayern Munich is scheduled for October 21, 2026, at the Allianz Arena. This time, however, the defensive picture is different.

Saliba has been recovering from a back injury and is not expected to return immediately. Recent reports indicate that Gabriel Magalhães is likely to be partnered by summer signing Ezri Konsa while the Frenchman continues his recovery.

For Konsa, this is the kind of assignment that can define a defender’s reputation.

Kane is not a centre-forward who can be managed through strength alone. He regularly drops away from the defensive line to receive the ball, draws centre-backs out of position and creates space for runners such as Michael Olise and Serge Gnabry.

If a defender follows him too eagerly, Bayern can exploit the space behind. If the defender gives him too much room, Kane can turn, pick a pass or shoot from range.

Konsa will need to find the right balance.

First, he must recognise when to engage Kane and when to hold the line. Second, he must communicate constantly with Gabriel, ensuring that one defender can step forward without leaving the other isolated. Third, Arsenal’s midfield must help cut off the passes that allow Kane to receive the ball facing goal.

And when Bayern cross into the box, concentration will be essential. Kane is an expert at arriving in the right place, disguising his movement and turning half-chances into goals.

There is another layer to the contest: Konsa and Kane are both England internationals. They know each other’s strengths from the domestic game, which could make the duel even more intriguing.

Familiarity may help Konsa anticipate Kane’s movements, but it also means he will be facing a striker who understands the habits of English defenders.

The Saliba blueprint – without the safety net

Saliba’s record provides a useful benchmark, not a guarantee. Kane has scored against Arsenal before, including from the penalty spot in April 2024, and Bayern will adapt their approach rather than simply repeat the same patterns.

Konsa does not need to imitate Saliba move for move. He needs to bring his own strengths while preserving the discipline that helped Arsenal restrict Kane in those previous meetings.

The target is clear: deny Kane clean receptions, reduce his touches in dangerous areas, stop him from turning freely and force Bayern’s other attackers to find different solutions.

Across those three Champions League meetings, Kane managed just four shots in 270 minutes, with only one on target and no goals from open play. In the most recent encounter, he did not attempt a shot at all.

Those are demanding standards to maintain against one of Europe’s most accomplished strikers.

On October 21, Arsenal may need Konsa to deliver precisely that kind of performance.

If he and Gabriel can keep Kane quiet while Arsenal’s midfield controls the spaces around him, the Gunners will have a real chance of carrying their defensive success into one of the most difficult away fixtures in European football.

Saliba has shown what the task requires. Now Konsa has the opportunity to show he can deliver it, too.
