NFL General Manager Fired After Tough Start
Chris Ballard is widely regarded as one of the genuinely good people in the NFL. But sometimes, the qualities that make someone a good person don’t always translate into success in a league where difficult decisions can make or break a franchise. It was announced today that Ballard was fired Indianapolis’ GM.
Ballard’s loyalty and willingness to believe in people were defining parts of his tenure with the Indianapolis Colts. Those traits can be valuable in building a team, but they can also become a weakness when a franchise needs to recognize that something isn’t working.
The Colts appeared ready to make a serious run last season after getting off to an 8-2 start. Ballard doubled down on that belief by trading two first-round picks for cornerback Sauce Gardner, making a significant investment in the team’s immediate future.
Indianapolis also committed substantial money to quarterback Daniel Jones coming off a torn Achilles. Both moves reflected a belief that the Colts had a legitimate chance to compete and needed to act accordingly.

But things haven’t worked out the way the organization hoped. The aggressive decisions failed to deliver the results Indianapolis was looking for, and Ballard is now out as the team’s general manager.
It’s difficult to question the intentions behind his moves. Ballard believed in his team, trusted his evaluations and tried to capitalize on a window of opportunity. Those aren’t necessarily bad qualities for a general manager to have.
The problem is that the NFL doesn’t reward good intentions. It rewards results, and eventually, every front office has to answer for its biggest decisions.
Ballard’s departure raises a difficult question about his time in Indianapolis: Did his loyalty and belief in people sometimes prevent him from making the tougher calls? His supporters will point to his character and commitment, but the results ultimately weren’t enough to keep him in the job.
For the Colts, a new chapter begins. For Ballard, his firing serves as a reminder that even respected people in football can find themselves on the wrong side of a results-driven business.
