📰 News we're reading

1. 3 Construction Workers, Company Charged In Fatal SF Trench Collapse: DA (patch.com) — San Franciscans are learning more about a deadly 2023 trench collapse near Oak and Divisadero streets, where a worker died after being buried in an unsupported excavation. The district attorney has now charged three D'Arcy & Harty Construction employees and the company with involuntary manslaughter and safety violations tied to the sewer project overseen by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.

2. 2 Hospitalized After Exploding Phone Causes Fire In SF Home: Officials (patch.com) — Neighbors in San Francisco's Coronado Street area woke to an early-morning blaze after a charging phone reportedly exploded and set a home on fire. Fire crews quickly contained the flames within 10 minutes, and two residents were hospitalized with minor smoke inhalation, highlighting everyday fire risks in city homes.

3. Then and now: A look back at San Francisco 49ers' 80-year history as fans celebrate team's legacy (abc7news.com) — San Francisco 49ers fans are celebrating the franchise's 80th season, looking back on decades of memories from Kezar Stadium and Candlestick Park to today's games at Levi's Stadium. Longtime Bay Area season-ticket holders reflect on rising ticket prices, legendary playoff moments, and hopes that this anniversary year ends with a sixth Super Bowl title.

4. With fewer public defenders, indigent defendants pay the price (floridaphoenix.com) — San Francisco's public defender office is highlighted as one of several nationwide systems overwhelmed by soaring caseloads and attorney shortages, with Mano Raju even cited for contempt after limiting new cases. The piece explains how similar crises in Texas, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere are leaving indigent defendants waiting weeks or months for lawyers, raising serious constitutional concerns about access to counsel.

5. Zena Vexler: Targeting Neutrophil Elastase and NETosis to Mitigate Infection-Triggered Childhood Stroke (hemostasistoday.com) — Researchers at UC San Francisco helped develop a mouse model to study how common infections can trigger childhood strokes, focusing on the role of neutrophils and a process called NETosis. Their Brain journal paper suggests that blocking neutrophil elastase during stroke may reduce brain bleeding and long-term damage, pointing toward potential future treatments for young patients.
