Jaden McDaniels signs historic extension never seen before in NBA

Jaden McDaniels has made NBA history after signing a new contract extension with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

He is the first player in NBA history to sign an extension while still having three fully guaranteed seasons remaining on a non-max contract, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

Minnesota agreed to a one-year, $40 million extension with the 26-year-old forward, keeping him under contract through the 2029-30 season.

McDaniels was already under contract for the next three seasons, but the Timberwolves chose to add another year rather than wait until he moved closer to free agency.

He originally signed a five-year, $136 million extension with Minnesota in October 2023, a non-maximum deal that contained no player or team options.

He averaged a career-high 14.8 points, along with 4.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.0 blocks over 73 games in 2025-26.

McDaniels was one of only eight NBA players to average at least one steal and one block per game last season.

The 6-foot-9 forward has also earned an NBA All-Defensive Team selection (in 2024) during his career.

McDaniels was originally selected with the No. 28 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers before his draft rights were traded to Oklahoma City and ultimately to Minnesota, where he has spent his entire six-year NBA career.
