Bayern Munich could have a major decision to make ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League showdown with Arsenal — should Manuel Neuer return straight to the starting lineup if he is medically cleared?
According to Bild (via iMiaSanMia), Manuel Neuer returned to team training on Monday, participating in the session for nearly 40 minutes before heading back to the dressing room alongside the players who started against RB Leipzig. Bayern Munich’s medical staff will continue monitoring the captain’s foot to assess how it responds to the increased workload. Provided there is no further fluid buildup, Neuer could start against Arsenal on Wednesday.
There is an obvious argument for bringing Neuer straight back. Even at this stage of his career, the veteran goalkeeper brings an enormous amount of experience, leadership, and composure to the biggest matches. Against an Arsenal side capable of punishing even the smallest defensive mistakes, having its captain between the posts could be a significant advantage for the Bavarians.
However, Bayern Munich must also consider the risks. A Champions League match of this magnitude demands full concentration and sharp reflexes, and Neuer cannot be at his best if his foot is still bothering him. With Jonas Urbig available on the sidelines, Bayern Munich has an option if there is any doubt about the captain’s fitness.
Urbig has shown that he can be trusted, but replacing Neuer in a match of this importance would still be a significant decision. Conversely, rushing the veteran back only for the injury to worsen could create an even bigger problem for Bayern Munich moving forward.
Ultimately, the medical staff’s assessment must come first. If Neuer is genuinely fit and ready, does his experience make him the obvious choice, or should Bayern Munich take the cautious route and stick with Urbig?
What do you think, Bayern fans? If medically cleared, should Manuel Neuer start against Arsenal, or should Urbig keep his place?
