The New York Knicks waited 53 years to celebrate another NBA championship. When the team opens the 2026-27 season Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden, the banner-raising ceremony should be an unforgettable moment for a fan base that endured decades of disappointment. The opponent adds another layer of drama.
The Philadelphia 76ers are coming to New York with LeBron James and Jaylen Brown preparing to make their debuts for the franchise. That means the Knicks' first game as defending champions will feature one of basketball's most famous players in a new uniform and a former Boston Celtics star beginning a different chapter of his career.
New York gets its moment before the basketball starts
The Knicks won the 2025-26 NBA title, ending a championship drought that dated to 1973. Their victory over the San Antonio Spurs gave New York a reason to celebrate that many younger fans had never experienced. Tuesday's ring ceremony and banner raising will turn that achievement into a permanent part of the arena's history.
Jalen Brunson remains the face of the Knicks, and the team has retained a core built around players such as Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns. The challenge now is different. New York no longer has to prove it can win a championship; it has to handle the expectations that come with defending one.
Philadelphia's roster changes make that task more interesting. James joins the 76ers after his long run in Los Angeles, while Brown arrived in the trade that sent Paul George to Boston. Alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, the newcomers give Philadelphia a high-profile group with enormous potential but little regular-season experience together.

Opening night will offer several storylines at once
The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, following Boston's afternoon opener in Detroit. The national spotlight will be fixed on Madison Square Garden for a combination of celebration, rivalry and first impressions.
It would be unreasonable to judge Philadelphia's entire season on one game. It would be equally premature to assume the Knicks can repeat simply because their championship core remains intact. But this matchup will offer a fascinating first look at both questions.
New York earned the right to raise a banner. Philadelphia arrives determined to interrupt the party. That is about as compelling an opening-night storyline as the NBA could have arranged.
