Injuries can hit hard for fantasy football teams at this time of year. It’s just part of the season-long process. But the matchups still matter, and here are the fantasy football defense and special teams rankings for Week 7 of the 2026 season.
There’s no surprise at the top of this week’s list. It’s a trio of very strong defensive units. Let’s dig right in and see how things should shake out.
Fantasy Football standouts
At the top of the list is a defense that figured to be tough all year. However, the Texans got off to a terrible start against the Bills. They’ve had a couple of top-10 finishes since then, but slipped to No. 23 against the Jaguars in Week 6.
This week, they get the New York Giants at home. It’s a little bit of a tricky matchup because the Giants could turn their starting quarterback assignment over to JJ McCarthy. He had an impressive comeback attempt in relief of Jameis Winston against the Saints. But it doesn’t matter. The Texans should be able to get back to their sack-happy ways after a goose egg last week.
One area the Texans need to be better is tackling, according to texanswire.com.
“Right now the tackling is not good enough,” head coach DeMeco Ryans said. “We had way too many missed tackles yesterday to where we had run stuff. We had the ball checked down in the flat. That's where we want the ball checked down, but we have to make those tackles. The tackling has to improve. Overall, it’s not good enough. And we have to improve that this week.”
Another big dog is the Broncos. You can make a case for them having the best matchup. The Cardinals have some weapons, but the Broncos sure looked good on defense against the Seahawks in Week 5. It could be a sign that the Broncos are getting back to the defense people expected them to be.
Lastly, the Vikings have a chance to make things happen against the Colts. It’s not that the Colts don’t have some threats, but the organization is a mess right now. The focus is off the football field. That can actually work two ways.
However, the Vikings have been making plays on defense all season. Back at home, they should do more of the same this week.
Other standouts
There are two defenses where the matchups make them very palatable this week. First, the Jets play host to the Dolphins.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said his team has the potential to be better on both sides of the ball, according to the Jets’ YouTube page via Heavy.com. He said the game against the Patriots revealed the needs.
“When it comes to this game, man, there’s a number of things that I can point to,” Glenn said. “There were some issues in this game, but really what it came down to was two things: our ability to finish and our detail when it comes to defensive football. So finishing on offense and detailing on defense is something we’ve got to get better at because I think we gifted two touchdowns that shouldn’t have happened. I’ve got to do a better job on defense of getting our guys ready to play.”
Taking on the lowly Dolphins, the Jets will have a chance to make things happen on defense. They racked up eight sacks against the Browns in Week 5. However, in Week 6 against the Patriots, they didn’t lay a glove on Drake Maye.
That should change this week against Malik Willis. He has taken 14 sacks in five games. Also, Willis has thrown four picks this year, so there’s a chance the Jets can make plays in the secondary as well.
The other good-matchup choice is the Browns against the Titans. Sure, the Titans are coming off a win. But quarterback Cam Ward is prone to mistakes. And he has only thrown for 998 yards in six games. Plus, the Titans can’t run the ball effectively.
This is a chance for the Browns to have a big day. The only thing scary is the Browns’ record. It is better than the team actually is. It’s not out of the realm of possibilities for this to be a crash game.
Fantasy Football sleepers

This is a great week to stream the Cowboys. They showed a few signs of life against a very good Green Bay offense. The Cowboys actually made some plays.
Now, they get a horrible Eagles offense with no real weapons — unless running back Saquon Barkley can get back on the field. But if you’re looking for sleepers, the Cowboys meet that expectation.
Also, the Cowboys should have more success offensively against the Eagles, giving the defense some help. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said the team will keep fighting, according to dallascowboys.com.
“But in terms of changes, no, we're going to get back to work,” Schottenheimer said. “We're going to figure it out. We have great trust in our offense. I'm not concerned about our offense. Last two weeks are the last two weeks, we own that. That is what it is. It has not been good enough. But we also have a history of being really explosive, really good. And we've done that not only last year, but in four of our games this year.”
Another sleeper, if you can handle it, is the Steelers’ defense. The Steelers have a good defense, but the matchup against the Saints on the road is tough. The Saints’ offense has looked good this season. Still, with other tough options this week, the Steelers have crept up the list of desirable choices.
