Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is in doubt to attend the club’s blockbuster UEFA Champions League clash with Arsenal due to illness.

Kompany is suffering from a viral infection which is impacting his legs, while he was absent from training and the pre-game press conference ahead of Arsenal’s visit on Thursday (AEDT).

Bayern assistant Aaron Danks fronted the media and told reporters: “It has affected his legs at times and he’s felt some pain.

“It’s just a virus. The doctors, the experts, know way more than I do. The most important thing we’ve just encouraged is that he rests, he takes the time he needs, whatever that may be, however long that may be.

“Whether that’s tomorrow or whether that’s two, three days’ time, I don’t know at this moment. Getting Vince to rest is a challenge.”

Kompany cut a subdued figure during Bayern’s 6-1 rout of RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga last week, with the Belgian boss remaining seated.

“I hope that he will get better soon and that he’ll be there tomorrow,” Arteta said pre-game.

“I’m a huge admirer of him, first as a person because I got to work with him for a few years.

“Then as a coach, in Belgium, in Burnley and what he’s done here – the identity and quality that his team has been showing for the past few years is on another level. Big credit to him”

Bayern, who are unbeaten through six Bundesliga games and top of the table on goal difference, have four points from their first two Champions League fixtures this season.

Premier League holders Arsenal – Champions League runners-up in 2025-26 – have won back-to-back games in Europe.
