Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is set for a long spell on the sidelines, after suffering a horrific injury in the lunchtime fixture this past Saturday. The summer signing from Aston Villa sustained a terrible collision in the 66′ minute of the win at Everton when he and opposing central defender Jarrad Branthwaite both went for the ball at the same time in the penalty area.
He had to be stretchered off, and from there he was taken to a hospital to undergo a series of precautionary/diagnostic tests.

Emiliano Martinez later posted a photo of himself from the hospital, an uplifting image, as it depicted him in good spirits. A club statement confirmed that he underwent “successful surgery on a fractured jaw.”
While there is no set definitive timeline for his return, but we can certainly speculate. Germán García Grova is a prominent journalist in Argentina, the home country of Martinez, and he is reporting that the shotstopper will be out 45-60 days.

So at 45 days, we’re looking at the rest of the month, all of November and the first week of December. That rules him out of seven Premier League fixtures, including but not limited to: this Saturday’s London derby versus Tottenham, the Halloween matchup with Manchester United, the crunch clash with Leeds on November 5 and an early December visit from Liverpool.
He will also miss the other matchup with the Reds, the October 28 EFL Cup 4th round tie. Obviously, he won’t be joining up with Argentina for the November internationals either.

In looking at the 60 day prospectus, he won’t be coming back until close to the festive fixtures time, and he’ll then miss out on the December 12 trip to Manchester City (hopefully, we’ll finally know their sanctions fate by then) as well.
So in other words, Mike Penders, who came in for Martinez on Saturday, will be holding it down in between the sticks for awhile. Teddy Sharman-Lowe is the backup, so if you need a #3/some cover, maybe they will call up Gaga Slonina, the Addison, Illinois (USA) native, from the U21s.
