The Pittsburgh Steelers have reunited with receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to add some needed depth at the position.
The Steelers signed the 32-year-old free agent to the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday. Valdes-Scantling played five games for the Steelers last season and became available after the Chargers released him Saturday.
A favorite of quarterback Aaron Rodgers’, Valdes-Scantling played one season for coach Mike McCarthy as a rookie in Green Bay. He and Rodgers teamed up for four seasons with the Packers.
The nine-year veteran has 221 career receptions, 3,708 yards and 21 touchdowns. Valdes-Scantling caught 10 passes for 80 yards and a TD for the Steelers last season. In three games with the Chargers this year, the 6-foot-4, 206-pounder had two catches for 22 yards.
McCarthy said on Monday he was open to bringing in outside help at the receiver position, “especially if you worked with individuals in the past or they have a past relationship here and so forth.”
The team found itself short on receivers after placing both Michael Pittman Jr. (foot) and Roman Wilson (finger) on injured reserve. Ben Skowronek also missed last Sunday’s win at Tampa with a calf injury, leaving DK Metcalf and rookie Germie Bernard as the only healthy receivers on the 53-man roster. The Steelers elevated practice squad receivers Brandon Smith and Brandon Johnson for the game, but Rodgers didn’t target either with a pass.
Valdes-Scantling has played in 119 regular-season games with the Packers, Chiefs, Bills, Saints, 49ers, Steelers and Chargers. He has 70 career starts including one with the Steelers last season.
