A South Bay Safeway store is closing permanently after 57 years of serving its San Jose neighborhood.

The store, at 6150 Bollinger Road, will shutter its doors on or around Nov. 13, Safeway confirmed to SFGATE. It’s the latest in a wave of Safeway closures in the Bay Area in recent years, including in Pinole, Hayward, Vallejo and San Francisco.

Like many Safeways in the Bay Area, the supermarket on Bollinger Road has become an unexpected refuge for nearby middle and high school students, not just as a hangout on minimum days, but as a tool for alternate diploma programs, where students practice life skills such as navigating the store, finding items and paying for them.

Alongside the closures, Safeway has made ongoing headlines this year for several mixed-use housing redevelopment proposals across the Bay Area with developer Align Real Estate, including in the Marina District, the Outer Richmond, Bernal Heights and the Fillmore District.

A July SFGATE investigation found that Safeway parent company Albertsons’ practice of keeping properties it owns vacant — or including covenants in leases that prevent businesses from selling groceries in those locations — has led to long-term vacancies in at least seven California supermarket buildings owned by the company. In September, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation to limit the practice.

Safeway declined to comment on the reason behind the closure.
