The Oklahoma City Thunder exacted sweet revenge on the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA season opener, securing a 116-104 victory. The Spurs ended the defending champions’ title hopes in last season’s conference finals, but this time, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s squad had the last laugh, leaving San Antonio fans devastated.
Victor Wembanyama’s team failed to show the form that carried them to the NBA Finals last season. The disappointing start left fans thoroughly underwhelmed and prompted them to express their frustration on social media.
“Embarrassing way to start the season! Not playing with any vengeance after the way last season ended! Smh,” a user remarked.
“Sacrificed my sleep to watch this humiliating game. F off,” a fan wrote.
“Stayed up all night for that shit,” another fan commented.
“Fraud ass team top to bottom lmaoo,” a fan chimed in.
Wembanyama struggled to establish his offensive rhythm throughout the first half. He finished the game with 12 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, one steal and six blocks. While he made a considerable impact defensively, his shooting difficulties restricted his offensive production against Oklahoma City.
Stephon Castle paced the Spurs with 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Dylan Harper finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists. De’Aaron Fox added 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
On the other hand, Gilgeous-Alexander produced the night's most impressive performance, recording 32 points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks. Chet Holmgren posted 14 points and seven rebounds, while Jared McCain scored 20 points and Jalen Williams chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds.
The season remains in its early stages. Hence, both teams have ample time to make adjustments. However, the opening game served as an early reminder that San Antonio will need more consistent performances from Wembanyama and the rest of the roster in the games ahead.
