Bayern Munich have confirmed that Joshua Kimmich will miss tonight’s Champions League encounter against Arsenal following a death in his immediate family.
The German champions announced the news on Wednesday morning, ruling the 31-year-old out of the league-phase fixture at the Allianz Arena.
In a statement on X, Bayern explained that Kimmich would not be involved and requested privacy for the midfielder and his family.
“Due to a death in his immediate family, Joshua Kimmich is not in the squad today for the match against Arsenal London,” the statement read.
“On behalf of the family, we ask that his privacy and grief be respected, and that further inquiries and reporting be refrained from.”
Bayern also expressed their sympathy and pledged their support for the Germany international during this difficult period.
Kimmich’s participation had already been uncertain after he missed Bayern’s final training session on Tuesday for personal reasons.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks subsequently admitted that he could not guarantee the midfielder’s availability when questioned during the pre-match press conference.
“For Joshua it is personal reasons. I am not sure what it means for tomorrow,” Danks told reporters.
The club’s latest announcement has now confirmed his absence, leaving Bayern without one of their most experienced players.
Kimmich has made 10 appearances across all competitions this season, starting nine matches under Vincent Kompany.
He also captained Bayern during their emphatic 6-1 Bundesliga victory over RB Leipzig last weekend, playing the entire match.
Bayern Munich face further absences against Arsenal
Kimmich joins an expanding list of unavailable players ahead of Wednesday’s European encounter.
Michael Olise is suspended following his dismissal against Viking FK, while Jamal Musiala remains sidelined with a thigh injury.
Kompany’s involvement is also uncertain after a viral infection forced him to miss Tuesday’s training session and press conference.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer faces a late fitness assessment after recently returning to training following a foot problem.
Aleksandar Pavlovic could consequently partner Tom Bischof in midfield, although Konrad Laimer represents another potential option.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will be seeking a third consecutive Champions League victory after his team defeated Napoli and Lille in their opening two matches.
The Gunners have collected six points, while Bayern have four following their victory over Bodø/Glimt and draw against Viking.
Kimmich notably scored the decisive goal when Bayern eliminated Arsenal from the Champions League quarter-finals in April 2024.
His absence removes an influential figure from Wednesday’s contest, although the circumstances surrounding his withdrawal extend beyond football.
