Liverpool produced one of the most dramatic nights of their season at Anfield on Tuesday, battling back from two goals down to beat Villarreal 4-3 in the Champions League.

The Reds endured a torrid start, trailing inside the opening half-hour after a Virgil van Dijk error and some loose defending let Villarreal in twice.

By full time, Andoni Iraola’s side had made it three wins from three in this season’s Champions League league phase, but the story of the night belonged to an 18-year-old rather than any of the club’s senior stars.

Rio Ngumoha was at the heart of the turnaround, setting up two of Liverpool’s four goals in a performance that left both his manager and teammates purring, and earned him a new entry in the club’s record books.

Villarreal led through Georges Mikautadze’s fourth-minute strike and a Sergi Cardona finish in the 29th minute. Liverpool hit back through Alexis Mac Allister, who headed in Kostas Tsimikas’ corner in the 36th minute, before Ngumoha’s cross found Ronald Araújo for an equaliser in first-half stoppage time.

Florian Wirtz replaced Araújo at the break, and Liverpool turned the game on its head in the second half. Ngumoha’s driving run set up Mac Allister’s second goal in the 65th minute, and Wirtz added a fourth three minutes later. Tani Oluwaseyi pulled one back for Villarreal in the 87th minute, but it was not enough to deny the hosts.

Ngumoha was substituted in the 73rd minute to a standing ovation from the Anfield crowd.

He became the youngest player in Liverpool’s history to register a Champions League assist.

Aged 18 years and 52 days, he is also the third-youngest player to provide multiple assists in a single Champions League match, behind only Warren Zaire-Emery and Theo Walcott.

Speaking after the game, Mac Allister gave credit to his young teammate.

“Rio was amazing tonight, he made the difference,” he said.

Ngumoha reflected on the significance of the record himself. “It’s the biggest club in the world, and for me to get that record is something special,” he told reporters.

The performance came on the back of a strong second-half display against Brentford days earlier, and Iraola addressed Ngumoha’s rapid development in his post-match press conference.

“I think he was coming from a very good game the other day, he had a good second half against Brentford,” Iraola said.

“Today he didn’t have an easy game also because they were demanding him defensively and their left-back was attacking a lot.”

The Liverpool boss singled out one passage of play where Ngumoha’s threat going forward proved decisive.

“There was a moment offensively where he was very difficult to stop,” Iraola said. “If we can put Rio in situations one against one, he makes plays, he produces things, today the assist for Alexis is a lovely play.”

Iraola also praised a moment of composure inside the Villarreal box. “He could go down for a penalty but he decides to continue which is a great decision,” he said.

The head coach pointed to improvements in Ngumoha’s physical output as well as his technical game.

“Also endurance wise he is able to play more and more minutes,” Iraola said. “We were pushing him a little bit. He was tired but I think he has done a good effort and I’m very happy for him.”

Iraola highlighted the winger’s attitude in training as a key factor behind his progress.

“I am happy with his attitude because he is eager to improve things that we think he needs to improve,” he said. “He is eager to add more things to his game.”

The coach also touched on Ngumoha’s tactical versatility, noting his growing comfort on the right flank.

“He has been on the right lately, he is feeling more comfortable now, shooting on his left, he can add this to his game,” Iraola said.

He ended his assessment with a note of caution befitting a player still early in his senior career.

“He is only 18, still not the full package and it is not always going to be like this, there will be ups and downs in the process.”

Ngumoha was previously Liverpool’s youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer, having struck against Newcastle United at 16 years and 361 days old. Tuesday’s display adds a Champions League milestone to that growing list of records.
