LeBron James made his Philadelphia 76ers debut on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden against the defending champion New York Knicks.
It’s safe to say fans at the most famous arena in the world were feeling themselves after finally capturing that elusive championship.

Having James in the building just added fuel to their fire. Like every other opposing fanbase has done for the past quarter century, New York supporters let him know their every thought for 2.5 hours.
Knicks fan heckle James
At one point, with Jalen Brunson shooting free throws, James had enough and offered a pointed retort at a courtside heckler.
"You don’t know what the fk you talkin about…I’m not from the west coast…I’m from Ohio baby. Ay…Fk you talkin about" –– New NYC resident LeBron James meets his neighbors https://t.co/0eHhcLK2uz

As a fellow Midwesterner, it’s easy to say that LeBron is exactly correct. It may be unclear what he was driving at here but those of us from flyover country need to stick together.
The incomparable Mike Tirico was on the call for NBC and expertly narrated the heated scene.

“He said hello to somebody over here,” Tirico said. “Spike Lee is over for a look and a chat. I heard a guy yell behind me, saying, ‘Hey, LeBron, just because you have a helicopter and you live in New York doesn’t mean we’re gonna cheer for you!’ LeBron is taking the helicopter rides back and forth from Philadelphia to New York and engaged here in some front-row convo.”
James responds to MSG fans
Tirico’s partner, Reggie Miller, joined in to suggest getting James all riled up might not prove to be the smartest strategy.
“That’s the last thing you wanna do is get LeBron going here in this building,” Miller added. “Here’s the guy in question that’s having words with LeBron. And guess who’s playing peacemaker? Spike Lee! He’s over here playing peacemaker. Boy, I have seen everything.”

Sure enough, Philadelphia locked into form and secured an opening night victory to make a statement. James was not the first or even second offensive option but did blend pretty seamlessly into a team with a lot of options.
Which is another thing you’d expect someone from the Midwest to do. We’re all about the collective and there’s no place for a me-first glory hog.

Just calling balls and strikes here but it is sort of lame to give anyone—even James—a rough time about how they choose to commute to work. At the end of the day who cares if it’s by helicopter or horseback as long as they show up for their assigned shift. It’s weird for New Yorkers to somehow take offense to a huge celebrity wanting to spend more time in the Big Apple than City of Brotherly Love. It’s a compliment at the end of the day.
Even fans rich enough to sit courtside can suffer from helicopter envy. We learned this from four seasons of Succession. Jealously and jealousy alone is why some didn’t much care for the Roys and Waystar Royco.
This is just one game out of 82 but NBA fans should be hoping James can keep this energy up the entire year. Are you not entertained?
