Mikel Arteta takes his Arsenal team to Bayern Munich today, trying to reach the Champions League final again for the second time in back-to-back seasons. PSG beat them on penalties in the final last season, and Arsenal were really close to winning that match and that trophy, but they could not make it happen.
The Gunners will continue to do their best to reach that level again, and they have what it takes, but they will probably have to win the trophy for that loss to stop haunting Arteta. His team were so close to winning after taking an early lead, only to concede a late equaliser when they were very close to winning the match.
Arteta’s Painful Memories of the Final
Penalties are always anyone’s game, and it went the way of PSG as the Parisians retained the title, but Arsenal wants to be the next European champions. Speaking ahead of the Bayern game, Arteta admits he has not recovered from that loss in the final. He said via Independent Sport:
“I tried, but I haven’t managed to. I tried for many weeks during the summer, but when I see the ball, the scenes, I hear the music, I want it so badly. We know that we have to go step by step, but I think that fire is within the team and all of us individually. We know what we had to go through – not being champions of Europe by a penalty. So, let’s try again.”

The Road Back to European Glory
Arteta’s words reveal the depth of the disappointment, and that hurt could fuel the team’s push this season. The near miss has left a mark, but it has also strengthened the resolve within the squad. The manager’s determination is clear.
Arsenal’s journey back to the final will be demanding, with Bayern standing in their way. The Gunners’ quality is not in doubt, but consistency at the highest level is essential. The experience of last season could prove invaluable.
The pain of defeat can be a powerful motivator, and Arteta will hope it drives his players forward. The club’s ambitions are clear, and the fans’ expectations are high. The coming matches will test their mettle.
