Arsenal’s style of play is not exciting, and most fans, neutrals and pundits have been calling them out on that for several months as the Gunners try to ensure that they win games. For years, Arsenal was associated with good football under Arsene Wenger, and even Mikel Arteta was brought on to implement the style of play at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.
He had been plucked from the staff of the Spanish gaffer, and Arsenal believed he could do a fantastic job on their team; however, that has not necessarily been the case. He has made the Gunners a team that consistently wins matches; however, when it comes to playing good football, there are more questions than answers.
Raya’s Defence of Arsenal’s Approach
Arsenal has some fantastic players in their squad who should play better, but they are not as bothered as their critics, with David Raya insisting the ultimate goal of every team is to win matches, and they are not so bothered about what people think of their playing style. He said to ESPN:
“No it doesn’t. People have their own opinions. We have our own opinion. At the end of the day, we have lost one game in 11 this season and if you call that boring or irritating, I don’t know what to say. We enjoy playing football. We enjoy going out there every single day to win football matches and that’s the most important thing.”

Results Over Style at the Emirates
Raya’s comments reflect a pragmatic mindset within the squad, where results take precedence over aesthetics. The goalkeeper’s point is clear, as consistency is what wins titles. The criticism will continue, but the players are focused on their objectives.
Arsenal’s identity has evolved under Arteta, and the emphasis on defensive solidity has brought success. The debate about style is unlikely to go away, but the manager’s priority is clear. The fans’ patience will depend on the team’s ability to keep winning.
The Gunners’ record speaks for itself, and the players believe that is what matters most. The pursuit of silverware requires a certain mindset, and Arsenal have embraced it. The coming months will test whether that approach can deliver the ultimate prize.
Raya’s confidence in the team’s method is unwavering, and the squad is united in its approach. The criticism may be harsh, but it comes with the territory. Arsenal’s focus remains on the next match and the next three points.
