Liverpool’s stance on Alexis Mac Allister’s new contract revealed

Alexis Mac Allister scored twice on Tuesday night as Liverpool came from two goals down to beat Villarreal 4-3 in the Champions League.

Mac Allister and Rio Ngumoha were Liverpool’s standout performers as the Reds secured their third consecutive victory in the competition.

The Argentine’s brace capped a remarkable turnaround after he faced heavy criticism last season for looking off the pace as Liverpool’s midfield was regularly overrun.

Mac Allister’s contract expires in June 2028, and his performances last term raised concerns among Anfield chiefs. After Liverpool handed Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch new deals, Mac Allister admitted the situation made him “very sad”.

Mac Allister said: “There was a chance [he could have left the club in the summer]. As everyone knows, I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which makes me very, very sad.

“Everyone can see I give my 100 per cent for this football club, every single day in training and games. Of course I can have very good games, very bad games like everyone. I always give my best.

“And I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts, and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn’t get mine. Of course, there is still time.

“The fans don’t need to worry because I will give my 100 per cent until the last day I’m here. We will see what happens. There were options to leave this summer, and I think right now I’m in the right club and I have the mindset to give my 100 per cent for this club.”

The 27-year-old remains hopeful of earning a contract offer through his performances. According to the Telegraph, Liverpool are in no rush to open contract talks with Mac Allister, whom they signed for a cut-price £35million in June 2023.

However, if he continues to perform with this level of energy and sharpness, he could yet change the club’s stance. Mac Allister, alongside Jeremy Jacquet, has been Liverpool’s most consistent performer.

The former Brighton star has scored eight Champions League goals for the Reds, all at Anfield, including a winner against Real Madrid last season.

This season, the Argentina midfielder has racked up 11 appearances, scored four goals and scored one for Liverpool across all competitions.
