Broncos have designated rookie running back Jonah Coleman to return from IR

The Denver Broncos announced on Wednesday evening that they have designated rookie running back Jonah Coleman to return from the injured reserve. The talented rookie suffered and played through a high-ankle sprain during the Broncos’ victory over the Jaguars in Week 2 before being placed on the short-term IR the following week.

Coleman returned to the practice field today and is now eligible to play this Sunday vs. the Cardinals if they activate him off the IR prior to the game.

As I mentioned, Coleman turned heads during his performance in the Broncos’ comeback victory vs. the Jaguars. He ripped off a few good runs, looked explosive, ran with power, and helped milk the clock late in the 4th quarter to make sure the Jags never had a chance to get the ball back again. He looked like a starting running back and did all this while dealing with a high ankle sprain that would send him to the short-term injured reserve. Now that he is healthy, he should have a big role in the Broncos’ struggling run game.

Veteran JK Dobbins has found the end zone in back-to-back weeks, but the overall performance has not been great. The entire offense, including quarterback Bo Nix, has been struggling in recent weeks, and an improved run game could help spark both.

I believe Coleman should have a significant role in the offense and the run game moving forward. Pair him with RJ Harvey, who has been the Broncos’ most explosive and consistent playmaker this season and hope your two young backs can spark this offense.

However, ever since Sean Payton has retaken the role of play-caller, Dobbins has seen an increased role with the offense, despite the results being sub-par, and I don’t see that changing right away. Still, I hope Coleman does see some snaps and touches this week and his role continues to grow as the season progresses.

I believe he will be activated off the IR prior to Sunday’s game, and we will see Jonah Elliss, who Sean Payton said would return this season, placed on the IR to open up a roster spot for Coleman.
