Former Arsenal defender handed career lifeline after serious knee injury

Former Arsenal defender Oleksandr Zinchenko has returned to Ajax to continue his rehabilitation from a serious knee injury, despite currently being without a club.

The 29-year-old Ukraine international has been granted permission to use the Dutch club’s training facilities as he approaches the final stages of his recovery.

Ajax confirmed the development on Wednesday, revealing that Zinchenko would complete his rehabilitation at their De Toekomst training complex.

However, the arrangement does not constitute a new contract, with the versatile defender remaining a free agent following his departure in June.

Zinchenko joined Ajax from Arsenal in February 2026 after his season-long loan at Nottingham Forest was terminated prematurely.

His move to Amsterdam initially offered an opportunity to revive his career following a difficult period in England.

However, he suffered a serious knee injury during his second appearance for Ajax against Fortuna Sittard, bringing his campaign to an abrupt end.

The Ukrainian subsequently underwent surgery and was ruled out for the remainder of the season.

His six-month contract expired in June, leaving him without a club while he continued his recovery.

Ajax have now welcomed him back, although there is no indication that a permanent return has been agreed.

Zinchenko expressed his appreciation to the club’s hierarchy and coaching staff for supporting his rehabilitation.

“I would like to say a massive thank you to Jordi Cruijff, coach Michel Sanchez and everyone at Ajax for giving me the opportunity to complete my rehabilitation and get back on track,” he said.

“I’m truly grateful to everyone at the club for the warm welcome and incredible support throughout this journey. It means a lot to me.”

Ajax manager Míchel has also welcomed the Ukrainian’s return, although he has stopped short of suggesting that another contract will follow.

The development comes eight months after Zinchenko ended his Arsenal career, having joined the Gunners from Manchester City in July 2022.

He initially became an important figure under Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, operating as an inverted left-back and contributing to the club’s improved performances.

However, injuries and increasing competition eventually reduced his involvement, prompting his loan departure to Nottingham Forest in September 2025.

His subsequent move to Ajax ended his three-and-a-half-year association with Arsenal.

Zinchenko must now complete his recovery before determining the next step in his career, with a potential return to Ajax remaining uncertain.
