Chelsea insiders believe Mike Penders could become an absolutely elite goalkeeper as he prepares to make his first Premier League start at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are without Emiliano Martinez, meaning new boss Xabi Alonso will have to turn to Penders this Saturday when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to West London.

Penders made his first league appearance when Chelsea first-choice goalie Martinez was stretchered off in their last outing with a fractured jaw.

He helped the Blues secure their first league clean sheet since January in that game versus Everton and is expected to start the club’s coming big games.

According to the Daily Mail, those working closely with the 21-year-old goalkeeper at Cobham are hugely impressed by his potential.

One senior source described his ceiling as “absolutely elite”.

Standing at 6ft 7in, Penders joined Chelsea in a deal worth around £17million around two years ago.

He spent last season out on loan and earned a place in Belgium’s 2026 World Cup squad.

Penders has also attracted comparisons with former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, given their shared height, left-footedness and development at Genk.

However, the youngster is determined to establish his own identity rather than live in the shadow of his international counterpart.

Despite his obvious promise, he still has areas to improve, particularly when dealing with crosses and commanding his penalty area.

Those weaknesses could come under scrutiny this weekend against a team that has attempted more crosses than any other Premier League team this season.

The visitors also lead the division for corners.

Chelsea goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts and the club’s coaching staff are working with Penders on his positioning, decision-making and technique ahead of the London derby.

Nevertheless, he has impressed those who know him, with former coaches describing him as someone with an unbelievable mentality.

Chelsea will hope that resilience helps Penders navigate a stern first test.
