Pre-match warm-ups at major stadiums can include light-hearted moments between squad members that sometimes result in minor physical contact. Those exchanges are usually forgotten once the session begins in earnest. A teenager who has been building his involvement around the first-team group experienced one such incident ahead of a Champions League fixture.
The player in question is still developing his role and has featured from the bench in recent weeks. An accidental step on the foot during a playful exchange with a senior defender briefly interrupted his preparations. He continued through the remainder of the warm-up without further issue and was available for selection later that evening.
Squad members often share those light moments before kick-off. The incident took place while coaching staff prepared a drill, and the teenager was able to rejoin the group and take part in the remaining exercises. He did not require any treatment and remained on the bench throughout the match itself.
Max Dowman was dealt a momentary injury scare ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich, according to Football.London. During the pre-match warm-up at the Allianz Arena, the 16-year-old appeared to suffer a minor foot problem after messing about with Ben White.
While the coaching staff prepared a drill, Dowman playfully attempted to dispossess the defender who was shielding the ball. The Hale End prospect grabbed White’s arm; as he tried to pull him away, the latter stepped back and accidentally stood on his team-mate’s foot.
Dowman hopped around in a circle a few times and laughed off the pain, while White smirked and shrugged his shoulders. As the squad moved towards the drill, the teenager waddled over and poked the ball away from White. He appeared to move a little gingerly at first, but once the session began he moved without any obvious discomfort.
Neither Dowman nor White featured in the 2-2 draw and both remained on the bench. Bukayo Saka did suffer an injury during the match itself, coming off inside the opening 10 minutes with a quad problem. Mikel Arteta later provided an update on that issue.
“They are a bit concerned. A player who has to come off with a really sharp pain is never good news, but we have to wait and see,” Arteta said after the game. In his post-match press conference he added: “It’s his quad. It was early in the game, and the level of intensity his game requires is something incredible. The quality, strength and attention you need has to be at the highest level, and those things happen unfortunately. It doesn’t look good at all, but we have to wait and see.”
Dowman’s warm-up incident remained a minor scare and did not affect his availability. The teenager has continued to train with the first-team group and remains part of the wider squad picture. Arsenal’s next fixtures will determine how both players progress from the events in Munich.
