Players who collapse to the turf after a routine pass in the opening minutes of a Champions League away fixture often signal an immediate muscular problem. Medical staff assess the situation on the pitch before a substitution is made, and the player leaves the field under his own power but with clear discomfort. Those moments leave the technical staff waiting for scan results once the match is finished.

A history of muscle issues can heighten the concern when the same player is withdrawn so early. Previous absences for hamstring problems and the management of an Achilles issue during an international tournament form part of the background. The manager is expected to update once further assessments are complete.

The player who enters as the replacement goes on to score the opening goal of the night. Wide options are already reduced by another absence in the squad. An extended spell on the sidelines would place greater demands on the remaining attackers for the fixtures ahead.

Bukayo Saka was forced off in the 10th minute of Arsenal’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Bayern Munich after suffering a quadriceps injury. The winger went down clutching his left thigh after attempting to play a pass outside the Bayern box with no significant contact involved.

He received treatment and was replaced by Eberechi Eze. Saka limped off the field and continued down the tunnel. Mikel Arteta spoke after the match and made clear the medical team’s initial view.

“They are a bit concerned. A player who has to come off with a really sharp pain is never good news but we have to wait and see,” Arteta told TNT Sports. “It doesn’t look good at all but we have to wait and see.”

Eze, introduced early, scored Arsenal’s opener in the 25th minute. Declan Rice later equalised as the side secured a point at the Allianz Arena. Saka has started the season with five goal contributions across all competitions but has faced fitness issues in recent months.

He was limited at the end of last season and with England at the World Cup by an Achilles problem picked up in March. He also missed more than 20 games in 2025 after a recurrence of a hamstring injury first sustained in December 2024. Arteta is already managing the absence of Christos Tzolis on the wing.

The early exit came after Saka had got into an attacking position. He stopped briefly to speak to Arteta on the touchline before heading down the tunnel. The full extent of the quadriceps injury will only become clear after scans.

Arsenal’s unbeaten start in the Champions League league phase continues, but the injury adds to the selection considerations for the coming matches. Clarity on the timescale is expected once the medical staff complete their assessment. Arteta’s comments underline the caution surrounding Saka’s latest setback.
