Lance Heard Early 2027 NFL Draft Profile

Lance Heard

Lance Heard

The Kentucky Wildcats have been the SEC’s surprise team this season, storming out to a 6-1 start, including wins over Texas A&M and LSU. The Wildcats’ roster strength is their offensive line, particularly left tackle Lance Heard. Heard was Kentucky’s top transfer portal addition, and he’s lived up to the hype. He is one of the main reasons the Wildcats are legitimate College Football Playoff contenders under first-year coach Will Stein. Heard is among the top offensive tackles in the country, but how does he stack up in a deep 2027 NFL Draft class at the position?

Lance Heard 2027 NFL Draft Background

Heard was a five-star recruit coming out of Neville (Louisiana) and was the third-ranked offensive tackle in the Class of 2023. He began his collegiate career at LSU in 2023, playing in 12 games and making one start. Heard didn’t give up a sack and allowed three pressures on 95 pass-blocking snaps at right tackle as a true freshman. After 2023, he transferred to Tennessee and immediately entered the role of starting left tackle. Heard started 11 games for the Volunteers in 2024, allowing two sacks and 21 pressures across 396 pass-blocking reps.

He maintained his production in 2025, making 12 starts and giving up three sacks and 21 pressures in 479 pass-protection snaps. Following two seasons in Knoxville, Heard transferred to Kentucky and has had his best season to date. Through seven starts at left tackle in 2026, he hasn’t allowed a sack and has given up just eight pressures. Heard has posted an impressive 85.7 PFF pass-blocking grade this season.

Lance Heard 2027 NFL Draft Strengths

Heard has the ideal frame for an NFL tackle, measuring at 6-foot-6 and 325 pounds. He plays with tenacious physicality, regularly driving defenders off the ball in the run game. His physicality is paired with great athleticism, as he climbs to the second level well as a run blocker. Heard is excellent at seeking contact when blocking downfield, and he can be an effective puller on run plays.

His pass blocking has improved significantly in 2026, as his no-sacks-allowed this season suggests. He has a strong anchor in pass protection, which lets him fend off bull rushes. Pass rushers struggle to compress the pocket against him. He also does a good job at picking up stunts as a pass blocker.

Lance Heard 2027 NFL Draft Weaknesses

Heard’s biggest issue is penalties. He had seven called on him in 2024 and 2025, and has three so far this year. At times, he lets opposing pass rushers get interior pressure, giving them an easy path to the quarterback. Another area Heard can improve is his balance. He has had plays in both the run game and pass protection where he loses his base, resulting in lost reps.

The Last Word

Heard was a highly-touted recruit a few years ago, and he’s proven his five-star rating throughout his collegiate career. His rare combination of size and athleticism gives him plenty of upside, and he’s performed well against elite competition. He’s a reliable blindside blocker and a valuable run-game piece. He needs to cut down on penalties, but he has the tools to be a quality starter at left tackle at the next level.

The 2027 offensive tackle class has two consensus first-round picks, Jordan Seaton and Trevor Goosby. After those two, there’s a massive second tier of prospects projected to go in day two. Heard is in that group and projects as a second-round pick with developmental upside. He can climb further with strong outings against ranked opponents Tennessee, Florida, and Missouri.
