Patrick Mahomes has kept his focus sharp this season. The Chiefs improved to 5-0 after a 22-6 win over the Chargers on Sunday, and the quarterback now has a lot to say off the field. His latest comments address a serious health scare involving fellow Eagles star Jalen Hurts, and they carry real weight around the league.

Mahomes addressed the situation on 96.5 The Fan podcast after the Eagles confirmed that Jalen Hurts has deep vein thrombosis and clots in both lungs. Hurts was first diagnosed with a superficial clot in his calf in London on Oct. 10, then played in the 19-17 loss to the Jaguars.

The Eagles later ruled him out of Week 6 and placed him on injured reserve. Reports say he will miss the rest of the season. The team and his agent, Nicole Lynn, said he is clinically stable and expects a full recovery.

“I mean, it’s extremely scary,” Mahomes said. “I mean that it comes from, I guess, a cleat or something like that. I don’t know all the details, but that’s something that happens every single week in the NFL.”

Mahomes did not know every detail, but noted that Hurts rarely misses games, which makes a life-threatening clot even harder to process. He added that the news puts football in perspective, since players are human beings with families.

Meanwhile, Mahomes was glad doctors found the clots now so Hurts can start treatment, and he hopes the quarterback returns to the field.

“So luckily they were able to kind of get it found out now what it actually is and he can get on the medication or whatever it is that he needs to be on and and hopefully he can get back on that field again cuz the NFL’s better when you have great players on it and he’s one of those players.”

Hurts will need blood thinners for at least three months, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Mahomes was not the only voice in the story, and questions about the Eagles and their medical decisions are growing.

The Eagles are also dealing with pressure from outside the locker room. Their statement said an ultrasound after the team’s flight to London showed a superficial clot, and doctors there concluded Hurts could safely play. He completed 21 of 40 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown against Jacksonville.

On Monday, coach Nick Sirianni declined to explain why the team allowed Hurts to fly home with the clot, according to the Associated Press. Several analysts also questioned whether Hurts should have played on little rest.

Tanner McKee has taken over under center. He threw for 215 yards and a touchdown in a 25-14 loss to the Panthers, which dropped Philadelphia to 2-4 and extended its losing streak to four games.

Kansas City Chiefs (5-0) travels to Seattle on Sunday night, while Philadelphia Eagles prepares to face the Cowboys with McKee under center. For Mahomes and the Chiefs, the focus stays on football, but this story is far from over
